Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response attempts to address the task by summarizing the provided table on gun and knife crime statistics in Great Britain. However, the coverage of the data is limited and contains significant inaccuracies in reporting the figures and trends. For example, the student claims that 'slight injuries remaind at peak moreover serious injuries as usuall constituted for the second position with 194 numbers'—misinterpreting the 194 figure, which actually represents the percentage increase for serious injuries, not their volume in 2006-2007. The overview is repetitive, restating that slight injuries accounted for the highest share multiple times without adding meaningful synthesis. While the response meets the minimum word count, the lack of accurate data selection and confused reporting prevent it from achieving a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response shows some organization with basic paragraphing, dividing the essay into an introduction, overview, and detail sections. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the logical flow is disrupted by repetitive statements and abrupt transitions, such as 'Ultimately, in between the period of 2006 to 2007'. Cohesive devices are used mechanically or inadequately, with frequent reliance on basic linkers ('In detail', 'In addition') or misused connectors. Paragraphing is also somewhat erratic, with sentences grouped together in a way that hampers readability. To improve, the writer needs to ensure that each paragraph builds logically on the previous one and that cohesive devices are used more naturally to link ideas together.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some topic-related vocabulary such as 'statistics', 'injuries', and 'categoruies', but the range is basic and repetitive. There are noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling throughout the text, including 'categoruies', 'remaind', and 'holded'. Furthermore, key terms are occasionally misused, such as treating percentage increase figures as absolute numbers of injuries. These lexical inadequacies and spelling errors occasionally cause confusion for the reader. Expanding the range of vocabulary and paying closer attention to word forms and correct spellings will be essential for reaching higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The grammar demonstrates a limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with occasional attempts at complex forms that are frequently faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors, including missing articles ('The table illustrate information'), incorrect verb tenses ('remaind', 'holded'), and punctuation mistakes, such as unnecessary spaces before commas and periods. Subject-verb agreement is also problematic in places. While the meaning of some sentences can still be parsed, the high frequency of errors across basic sentence patterns causes difficulty for the reader and restricts the score. Greater control over basic verb forms, articles, and sentence punctuation is needed to improve this score.
