Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response addresses the task only partially, earning this band because the selection of data is very limited and contains significant inaccuracies. While the writer attempts to summarise the table, key features are missed or misreported. For instance, the data for 2004-2005 is misread, incorrectly stating that '41 were serious' when the table clearly shows 411, and the overall trends across the decade are not comprehensively covered. Additionally, the final sentence of the body paragraph confuses years and data points by mixing the 2005-2006 drop with fatal injuries from 2006-2007. To achieve a higher band, the response would need to select and accurately report a broader range of key features from the table, ensuring that figures are transcribed correctly and that comparisons are made more thoroughly across the entire time period.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some basic organisation in the response, but it lacks clear overall progression. The essay is divided into a brief introduction, a single body paragraph, and a concluding remark, which provides a rudimentary structure. However, cohesive devices are handled inadequately and repetitively, relying heavily on simple connectors like 'Moreover', 'However', and 'Hence'. Furthermore, referencing and logical flow are occasionally faulty, particularly in the body paragraph where the transition between statistics is jarring and difficult to follow. To move to a higher band, the writer needs to logically sequence information more effectively, grouping data into clearer thematic or chronological categories, and use a wider range of cohesive devices smoothly without mechanical repetition.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The writer manages to convey the basic topic by using terms like 'fatal, serious and slight injuries', 'gun and knife crime', and 'crime rate'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'total number of crime committed were' (where 'crimes' is plural) and 'degree of injuries' being used as a synonym for the number of injured people. Less common vocabulary is attempted with inaccuracy, and the repetition of basic words restricts the range. To improve, the writer should incorporate a wider variety of precise vocabulary and precise collocations related to data reporting, while ensuring correct word forms and pluralisation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences and basic attempts at complex forms that are often faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('the total number of crime... were'), missing articles, and awkward prepositional phrases ('crime committed by gun and knife'). Punctuation is also occasionally misused, such as unnecessary commas separating verbs from their objects ('reported serious and, 653 were reported slight'). To reach a higher band, the writer must produce a greater variety of error-free complex sentence structures, paying closer attention to subject-verb agreement, pluralisation in grammatical patterns, and overall sentence construction.
