Student answer (Band 6.5)

The data table illustrates the count of fatal, serious and slight injuries as an outcome of crimes using gun and knife in Great Britain over a period of 9 years from 1998 to 2007 and it also contains the rate of increase of each degree of injury over the timeframe.

Overall, it is evident that the fatal injuries accounted for the lowest proportion whereas the slight injuries have an exponential growth over the period. Additionally, the overall number of injuries injuries have a dramatic increase over the timeframe with the year [redacted phone] recording the highest crime injury rate.

Looking at the table at more depth, the fatal injuries had never exceeded 100, had fluctuations between the years and hit a maximum of 95 in the year [redacted phone]. The serious injuries caused by Gun and knife crimes had increased by nearly 200 percent between 1998 and 2006, with a peak of 476 during the year [redacted phone].

On the other hand, the slight injuries experienced exponential growth from 653 injuries in the year [redacted phone] to roughly 3300 injuries in [redacted phone], which is an increase of over 400 percent in slight injuries. In total, these injuries had nearly increased five-fold from a low of 864 to touching the peak of 3912 and culminating at 3821 vrime injuries.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the table, including the figures for fatal, serious, and slight injuries, as well as the percentage increases. It achieves a solid coverage of data points, citing specific figures such as the peak of 95 for fatal injuries and 476 for serious injuries. However, some aspects are slightly under-developed or imprecise; for instance, the description of slight injuries generalises the final period figures rather than capturing the exact details accurately, and the final paragraph contains a typo referring to 'vrime injuries'. Overall, the selection and reporting of data satisfy the requirements for this band level, showing a clear overview alongside relevant comparisons, though slightly tighter precision would elevate the response further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introductory statement to the overview and the body paragraphs detailing specific trends. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different categories of injuries. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader, with phrases like 'Overall, it is evident', 'Looking at the table at more depth', and 'On the other hand'. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally slightly mechanical, such as the redundant repetition in 'overall number of injuries injuries', which shows minor faults in cohesive linking. To reach a higher level, the integration of cohesive devices could be smoother and less formulaic, ensuring that transitions between data points feel entirely natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and phrases such as 'exponential growth', 'fluctuations', and 'culminating at'. There are, however, some lexical inaccuracies and word-choice errors that prevent a higher score, such as 'count of fatal' instead of 'number of fatal', and a typographical error resulting in 'vrime injuries'. Additionally, collocation could be more precise in places. Despite these minor flaws, the vocabulary remains sufficient to communicate the main points clearly without impeding the reader's understanding, which aligns well with the expected lexical profile for this level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over relative clauses and introductory participial phrases. There are instances of effective grammatical structures, such as 'which is an increase of over 400 percent'. However, some grammatical errors and awkward phrasing persist, including the tense slip in 'the overall number of injuries injuries have a dramatic increase' (where 'had' or present simple would fit better, or plural agreement issues like 'injuries injuries'). Punctuation and basic sentence construction are generally sound, and errors rarely impede communication. To achieve a higher band, the writer would need to eliminate minor structural slips and display a wider variety of error-free complex sentences.
