Student answer (Band 6.0)

The table provides the information about the number of fatal, serious and slight injuries resulting from gun and knife crime in Great Britian between 1998 to 2007.

Overall, the proportion experienced growth for each degree of injury over the time where period between 2001 to 2002 recorded the highest fatal injuries, while period between 1998 to 1999 and 2005 to 2006 had the lowest with same number. However, the maximum serious injuries had occurred during 2005 to 2006 and the maximum slight injuries had occurred during 2004 to 2005.

The year between 2001 to 2002 stood at 95 fatal, 392 serious, and 1390 slight injuries, compares to highest total injuries at 3912 between [redacted phone] period although it has lower number of fatal injuries. The least total injuries had occured between 1998 to 19999 at 864 injuries which had all three categories least injuries as 49 fatal, 162 serious and 653 slight.

Turning to the percentage increase from 1998 to 2007 the highest increased recorded at 405 percent in slight injuries while least at 18 percent in fatal injuries and 194 percent in serious injuries. In total injuries, the increased percentage over the years is 342 percent from year 1998 to 2007.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons across the data. For instance, the student correctly identifies the peak years for different types of injuries, such as serious injuries peaking during 2005 to 2006 and slight injuries during 2004 to 2005. However, some parts of the response are slightly under-developed or contain minor inaccuracies in data reporting, such as stating that the period between 2001 and 2002 recorded the highest fatal injuries when the table shows 95 for that year compared to other figures, and misreading the lowest fatal injury period. Additionally, the overview is slightly unfocused, covering minor details rather than the broader overarching trends. To reach a higher band, the overview should clearly highlight the main general trends across the entire period without immediately jumping into specific data points, and data details must be selected and reported with greater precision.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the information logically into an introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. Information is generally organised by categories and timeframes. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty, as seen in awkward transitions like "where period between" and "compares to highest total injuries". Paragraphing is present, but the internal logical progression within paragraphs could be smoother and better managed. Referencing and cohesive devices are used, but they occasionally lack precision or flexibility, leading to sentences that feel slightly disjointed. To achieve a higher level of cohesion, the student should employ a wider and more natural range of cohesive devices and ensure that referencing between sentences is seamless and clearly signposted.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms related to crime statistics such as "fatal", "serious", "slight", and "proportion". There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, but these are sometimes accompanied by inaccuracies in word choice, form, or collocation, such as "the proportion experienced growth" instead of numbers or figures rising, and spelling mistakes like "Britian" and "occured". There are also awkward phrasings like "least at 18 percent" and "the increased percentage". These lexical errors do not impede communication, as the reader can still understand the intended meaning, but they prevent the response from achieving a higher band. To improve, the student should focus on precise word choice, accurate word forms, correct spelling, and natural collocations when discussing statistical trends.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as subordinate clauses ("although it has lower number of fatal injuries"). There are some grammatical errors and inaccuracies in articles, prepositions, and verb tenses, such as "the period between 1998 to 2007" instead of "from 1998 to 2007", "highest increased recorded" instead of "highest increase was recorded", and missing articles before nouns like "highest total injuries". Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout the text. To reach a higher band, the student should aim to increase the frequency of error-free complex sentences and exercise greater control over articles, prepositions within grammatical patterns, and passive verb forms.
