Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons across the data. An overview is provided, highlighting the general trends and the relative magnitude of different injury types. However, certain details are under-developed or inaccurately described. For instance, the student states that slight injuries 'rose steadily until 2007 at 3296', but the data for 2006-2007 is actually missing from the table, and 3296 represents the 2005-2006 figure. Additionally, the final sentence mixes up the percentage increases for the categories with the overall description of the data. Despite these minor inaccuracies, the core requirements of Task Achievement are met.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at paragraphing, moving from an introduction to an overview, and then into detailed body paragraphs. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty. Transition words and referencing devices are occasionally used awkwardly, such as starting the final paragraph abruptly with 'The least popular injury was fatal injury...' without a smooth logical bridge. Furthermore, the progression between ideas feels slightly disjointed due to errors in referencing specific years and figures, which disrupts the logical flow of the data presentation.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms related to crime statistics such as 'fatal', 'serious', 'slight', 'proportion', and 'fluctuated'. There are, however, noticeable word choice and collocation errors that prevent the writing from achieving a higher band. For example, using the phrase 'The most popular injury' is inappropriate when discussing negative events like violent crime. Other minor inaccuracies include 'consistenly' (spelling) and phrasing like 'The least number of injuries recorded was fatal', which could be expressed more naturally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting relative clauses and participial phrases such as 'resulting from gun and knife crime' and 'which includes the percentage increase'. There are, however, several grammatical errors throughout the text, including tense inconsistencies, missing articles, and awkward syntactic structures (e.g., 'the number rose and fell started from 1999 to 2007'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur with enough frequency to show a lack of consistent control over complex grammatical patterns.
