Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially. While it attempts to present an overview and mention several figures from the table, such as the highest slight crime figure of 3,424 in 2004-2005 and the percentage increases at the end, key parts of the data are missing or confused. For instance, the writer misinterprets the final year data, incorrectly stating that there were no injuries in serious and slight categories in 2006-2007 when the table simply left those cells blank. Additionally, the overview is imprecise, and some comparative statements lack clarity. To move to a higher band, the writer needs to provide a clearer, more accurate summary of the main trends without misinterpreting missing data points, and ensure that all selected figures are reported correctly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is some organization evident with the use of introductory and transitional phrases like 'Looking from an overall perspective' and 'Turning towards the details', but there is no clear overall progression. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of information is somewhat confused, jumping back and forth between different years and categories of injury. Cohesive devices are sometimes inaccurate or awkward, such as 'Moving further' used redundantly, and referencing is occasionally unclear. To improve, the writer should ensure that ideas and data points are sequenced logically, grouping related trends together into coherent paragraphs with more precise and natural cohesive links.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, with noticeable errors in word choice, form, and spelling. Examples of lexical slips include 'tablbe' instead of table, 'illustrate' instead of illustrates, 'offence' instead of offenses, 'persperctive' instead of perspective, and 'rapadily rise' instead of rapid rise. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'proportion' or 'volume rise', but inappropriate word choices and frequent spelling errors cause some difficulty for the reader and impede clear communication. To achieve a higher band, the student must expand their range of vocabulary, pay closer attention to word forms, and eliminate spelling mistakes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response shows a very limited range of structures, with frequent grammatical errors. Simple sentences dominate, and attempts at complex structures are often faulty, such as in 'the injury were same in fatal, which was 49, where in 2003-2004 was just 10 more injury'. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement ('the injury were', 'injury... was increase'), article usage ('the maximun number was slight crime'), and plurals ('10 more injury'). These frequent errors can cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer needs to demonstrate better control over basic sentence construction, verb tenses, plurals, and subject-verb agreement while attempting a wider variety of accurate complex sentences.
