Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response only partially addresses the task requirements. Furthermore, the length requirement is not met, as the response falls slightly short of the 150-word minimum. While the writer attempts to summarise the table by mentioning specific data points—such as the 49 fatal injuries in 1998-1999 and the percentage increases at the end—the selection of information is disjointed and fails to provide a clear overall picture of the trends. The overview is weak, and some figures are misinterpreted or stated vaguely, such as the claim that no incidents were reported in the serious category for 2006-2007 when the data for that year was actually blank. To reach a higher band, the response needs to fully cover all parts of the task with a well-developed overview and accurate reporting of the main features.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation to the response, but it lacks a clear overall progression. The writing is divided into a short introduction, a body paragraph attempting to describe various years, and a concluding sentence about percentage increases. However, the transitions between ideas feel abrupt and mechanical, such as moving arbitrarily from fatal injuries to serious injuries and back again without a logical structure. Cohesive devices are used minimally and sometimes inappropriately, such as 'Meanwhile' and 'After that'. Paragraphing is also poorly managed, as all body points are crammed into a single block of text rather than being logically grouped. To improve, the writer needs to structure the response with clear paragraph breaks and ensure ideas flow logically from general trends to specific data comparisons.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task, containing noticeable errors that occasionally hinder clarity. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'proportionate trend' and 'constitues', but these are used inaccurately or with spelling errors. There are also awkward word choices and phrasing, such as 'less number of injuries happened comprises of only 49' and 'quite highest among all'. Repetition of basic terms like 'injuries' is also evident throughout the text. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their lexical range, ensure correct word forms and spelling, and use vocabulary with greater precision to describe statistical data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences and basic clauses. Attempts at more complex structures are frequently faulty, leading to noticeable grammatical errors. There are issues with subject-verb agreement and tense usage, such as 'number of injuries occured is less' and 'fatal injuries figures shows decline'. Additionally, articles and prepositions are mishandled in places, such as 'in fatal, 194% in serious and 405% in slight injuries incresase in percentage has been observed'. Frequent errors of this nature cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer should aim to produce a wider variety of complex sentences with better control over grammar, punctuation, and agreement.
