Student answer (Band 6.0)

The data table illustrates statistics for gun and knife crime in Great Britain that resulted in three degrees of injury–fatal, serious, and slight– from 1998 to 2007, including the percentage increase in each category over the period.

Overall, it is clear that the figures of all three types of injury increased over the 9-year of period, with slight injury recording the highest figures. In terms of percentage increase, slight injuries experienced the greater rise than the total number of injuries. The fatal category recorded some cases in the final year of the survey, while the other categories remained at zero.

In [redacted phone], the total number of injuries stood at 864, comprising 49 fatal, 162 serious, and 653 slight injuries. This figure subsequently increased in the following years, reaching 1,195 cases, of which fat 62 were fatal, 200 were serious and 933 were slight. Although the number of fatal and slight injuries fluctuated in 2002 and 2005, respectively, the number of serious injuries rose considerably. Between 2005 to 2006, the number of total injuries and slight declined from 3912 to 3821 and from 3424 to 3296, respectively. In [redacted phone], fatal category recorded 58 cases, while no cases were reported in the other categories.

Meanwhile, the overall percentage increase of demonstrated the highest figures for slight at 405, whereas total injuries recorded only 342.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially, sitting comfortably at the given level. While you successfully identify some key features—such as the overall upward trend and the dominance of slight injuries—certain parts of your overview and body paragraphs are underdeveloped or factually inaccurate. Specifically, your claim that the fatal category recorded cases in the final year while others remained at zero misinterprets the table's data for 2006-2007, where missing data (dashes) were present for serious, slight, and total crimes rather than absolute zeros. Additionally, some trends are mentioned without sufficient extension or precise support, meaning key comparative elements across the full timeframe are glossed over rather than fully detailed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

Your writing shows a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure separating the introduction, overview, and specific data details. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader through the statistics, such as 'Overall', 'In terms of percentage increase', and 'Meanwhile'. However, referencing and cohesion occasionally become mechanical or slightly faulty. For instance, the transition between years feels a bit abrupt at times, and phrases like 'the overall percentage increase of demonstrated' contain referencing flaws that disrupt smooth logical progression. Paragraphing is used sufficiently, but tighter integration of the data points would elevate the structural flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'illustrates', 'statistics', 'fluctuated', and 'percentage increase'. You also attempt less common vocabulary items like 'dominance' or descriptive phrasing. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation errors that prevent a higher band, such as 'the 9-year of period' instead of 'the 9-year period', 'the greater rise' instead of 'the greatest rise', and awkward phrasing like 'the overall percentage increase of demonstrated'. Spelling and word forms are generally clear and do not impede communication, allowing you to meet the criteria for this band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

Your response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at varied clause structures, such as 'Although the number of fatal and slight injuries fluctuated...'. There are, however, some recurring errors in grammar and punctuation. Examples include verb form inaccuracies like 'fat 62 were fatal' (a typographic artifact), noun-phrase agreement issues such as 'slight injury recording the highest figures' rather than 'slight injuries', and preposition or structural slips like 'Between 2005 to 2006' instead of 'Between 2005 and 2006'. Despite these errors, the grammatical control is sufficient that they rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow your main points.
