Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response covers parts of the task by identifying some main features and making basic comparisons, such as noting the highest fatal offences in 2001-2002 and mentioning the overall percentage increases. However, the overview provided in the second paragraph is somewhat unclear and contains expression issues ("offences which are less contradictory holds the highest rate"). Furthermore, some data points are under-developed or inaccurately described, such as stating that serious crimes doubled over the years when the table shows a different pattern for specific degrees of injury. To reach a higher level, the response needs a clearer overview of the main trends without confusing phrasing, and a more accurate selection and reporting of the key statistical figures across all injury types.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic structure with an introduction, an overview/body paragraph, and supporting body sentences, giving it a coherent overall arrangement. However, the progression of ideas lacks clarity, particularly in the opening sentences where the logical flow is disrupted by awkward phrasings. Paragraphing is attempted, but grouping all details into a dense block of text rather than clearly separating categories (like fatal versus slight injuries) makes the progression harder to follow. Cohesive devices are used, but they are sometimes mechanical or inaccurate, such as "when it comes to" and "moreover", which do not always connect the data points smoothly. To improve, ensure that each paragraph focuses on a distinct trend and that transitions between sentences guide the reader logically through the data.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is minimally adequate for the task, attempting some less common words and phrases such as "grievous hurt offences", "dominance", and "respectively". However, there are noticeable lexical and collocational inaccuracies that reveal a limited range, such as writing "injuries from two weapons gun and knife in british area" instead of "in Great Britain", and using "less contradictory" and "non-serious injuries" inappropriately. Word formation errors also occur, such as "upto". While communication is not severely hindered, the frequent minor slips and awkward collocations prevent the vocabulary from scoring higher. To improve, use more precise academic collocations and ensure that terms directly reflect the provided data rather than inventing colloquial descriptions.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and subordinate structures like "while in the year 1998-1999 and 2005-2006 it noted to be the lowest which is 49 incidents." However, there is a limited range of reliable structures, and attempts at complex sentences frequently contain grammatical errors. Subject-verb agreement issues are present, such as "The serious crimes gets doubled" and "offences... holds", along with incorrect passive voice usage like "it noted to be". Punctuation and preposition errors also occur within grammatical patterns. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to increase control over complex sentence structures, ensure correct verb forms, and eliminate frequent grammatical errors that distract the reader.
