Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, coming in significantly short at 133 words (with 31 words copied directly from the prompt discounted). Furthermore, the task is only partially addressed. While the student attempts to present some figures from the table, there are severe factual inaccuracies and misreadings of the data. For instance, the totals and years are confused throughout the body paragraph, stating that the total for 2004-2005 was 2376 (whereas the table shows 3912), and misinterpreting the final two rows. The overview provided is also overly simplistic and contains inaccurate peak figures. To improve, the writer must ensure data is accurately transcribed and interpreted, write a clear, error-free overview of the main trends, and ensure the word length requirement is fully met.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response demonstrates some attempt at organization, but the overall progression is heavily impaired by mechanical cohesion and a lack of proper paragraphing. The entire body of the report is squashed into a single, massive run-on paragraph, which makes the text difficult to follow. Cohesive devices are used repetitively and mechanically, predominantly relying on basic transitional phrases like 'moreover', 'furthermore', and 'in addition' to link clauses that should form distinct sentences or paragraphs. Referencing is also weak, with ambiguous pronoun usage ('this number'). To move to a higher band, the student needs to group data logically into separate paragraphs with clear thematic topics, vary cohesive devices naturally without overusing connectors, and structure sentences to show clear logical relationships.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, heavily mirroring the language provided in the task prompt ('fatal', 'serious', 'slight', 'injuries', 'gun and knife crime'). There are several spelling errors ('desbribes', 'grqat britain', 'leastb', 'incerase', 'inerase') and word-form issues ('higher number of injuries are conducted' instead of 'occurred'). The lexical range is barely adequate for the task, as the writer struggles to use precise terminology to describe numerical trends or paraphrase the prompt effectively. To achieve a higher band, the student must expand their vocabulary range to include more sophisticated synonyms, improve spelling accuracy, and use precise collocation and phrasing when reporting statistical data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The text displays a very limited range of sentence structures, consisting mostly of simple and awkwardly joined compound sentences. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the response, including subject-verb agreement issues ('the higher number of injuries are', 'the number of injuries are'), incorrect verb tenses for historical data, and a complete absence of capitalisation ('overall', 'moreover', 'british') and standard punctuation, as sentences run together without proper terminal full stops. Errors frequently cause strain and difficulty for the reader. To improve, the student must focus on foundational grammatical accuracy, ensure correct tense usage for past data, master subject-verb agreement, and apply correct punctuation and capitalisation rules across the text.
