Student answer (Band 5.5)

The table demonstrates the crime rate in Britain categorized on the basis of weapon used for assaulting and the level of injuries occured as fatal, serious and slight for the period [redacted phone].Overall, the total injuries depicts a considerable figure in the beginning which continued to increase sharply throughout the whole period.

In 1998 the crime rate sharply rose causing several slight, fatal and serious injuries and the trend continued to follow the same pattern upto 2002.By 2002 the total injuries assaulted to individuals by gun and knives climbed to 1877 but following 2003 this figure dropped slightly whereas the total injuries were still high. The serious incidents in [redacted phone] followed the same trend, however the fatal and slight injuries still resulted in a high proportion total incidents.Additionally the table indicates approximately 58 injuries annually which accounts for the total incidents as well annually for the year [redacted phone].The slight injuries along the total figure occupied the most proportion of the incidents throughout the period while serious and fatal incidents were reported to be less than others.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially, presenting some overview information and making a few attempts to report data from the table. However, the selection of main features lacks clarity and precision, and the writing tends to generalise inaccurately in places, such as claiming the trend continued sharply throughout the whole period when figures actually fluctuated. Data points are sometimes misread or confused, like the statement regarding 2006-2007 indicating approximately 58 injuries annually for total incidents. To reach a higher level, the response needs to accurately select and report the most significant figures and trends—such as overall totals and the highest or lowest points for specific injury types—without misinterpreting the numbers provided in the table.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation evident in the structure, beginning with an introduction and following with body details, but there is no clear overall progression of information. Cohesive devices are sometimes used mechanically or inaccurately, and referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in transitions between years and categories like 'following 2003 this figure dropped slightly whereas the total injuries were still high'. Paragraphing is attempted, but ideas within the body paragraph feel grouped somewhat randomly rather than following a logical sequence of comparisons or time periods. To improve, you should ensure that each sentence leads clearly into the next, using appropriate and varied cohesive links to connect data points smoothly.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey a basic topic. There are noticeable errors in word choice and word formation, such as 'occured' instead of 'occurred', 'assaulted' used incorrectly as a verb of motion or state, and 'most proportion' instead of 'largest proportion'. Spelling and collocation inaccuracies occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader. To move up to a higher band, you need to use a wider range of precise vocabulary appropriate for describing statistical data, such as appropriate nouns and verbs for trends (e.g., 'fluctuate', 'peak', 'decline'), and pay closer attention to standard word forms and spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a limited range of sentence structures. While there are some attempts at complex sentences, they are often faulty or awkward, such as 'The table demonstrates the crime rate in Britain categorized on the basis of weapon used for assaulting and the level of injuries occured as fatal, serious and slight for the period 1998-2007.' There are frequent errors in grammar, including punctuation spacing issues, missing articles (e.g., 'on the basis of weapon used'), and prepositions (e.g., 'categorized on the basis of'). These errors can occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. To achieve a better band score, incorporate a wider variety of error-free complex grammatical structures and carefully check punctuation and article usage.
