Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response covers some parts of the task, such as identifying the peak year of 2004-2005 and mentioning the overall increase in minor injuries by 405%. However, the selection of data is somewhat erratic and fails to provide a fully clear or complete summary of the main features across all categories. Furthermore, the final paragraph contains inaccurate information, claiming there are no slight or critical wounds in 2006-2007, whereas the table simply lacks data for that year. This partial and at times inaccurate reporting of the data restricts the development of the response, keeping it at a level where key features are under-developed or misconstrued.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The writing demonstrates some organisation, with an introductory sentence, an overview, and subsequent body paragraphs. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression and logical flow between ideas. Cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or awkwardly used, such as the sequential transition words 'Firstly' and 'Secondly' which do not accurately map the logical structure of data comparison. Paragraphing is present, but the internal links within paragraphs are occasionally repetitive or unclear, resulting in a somewhat disjointed narrative that prevents the essay from achieving a smooth and logical progression throughout.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is limited and contains noticeable inaccuracies that occasionally cause confusion. The student attempts to paraphrase the prompt using terms like 'life threatening, critical and some minor wounds' and 'weapons and daggers', but these choices do not accurately reflect the precise medical categories of 'fatal, serious and slight' or the broader term 'gun and knife crime'. Additionally, there are awkward word choices and phrasing, such as 'minor injuries were accounted for 3424' and 'crucial' instead of serious. These lexical limitations and errors mean the range of vocabulary remains restricted to minimally adequate for the task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response employs a limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple or faulty complex sentences. There are frequent errors in grammar, verb forms, and passive voice usage, such as 'were accounted for', 'were increased by 13', and 'subsequently' used where 'respectively' or 'subsequent years' might be intended. Prepositional phrases and article usage also show frequent inaccuracies, such as 'in 1998-2000' when referring to a range of years or events. These recurring errors require some effort from the reader to decode the intended meaning and reflect a restricted grammatical control.
