Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially and struggles with interpreting the statistical data correctly. The student misinterprets raw figures and percentage increases as percentages throughout the text, stating for instance that slight injury percent 'started from 653 percent'. An overview is attempted in the second paragraph, but it is poorly formulated and confused by the misuse of numerical values. While some main features are mentioned, such as the overall rise in crimes and the categorization of injuries, the under-developed presentation and confusion between absolute numbers and percentages mean the response fails to fully satisfy the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some basic organization with a separate introductory paragraph, an overview, and body paragraphs discussing specific trends. However, there is a distinct lack of clear overall progression, making the sequence of ideas feel disjointed. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and sometimes inaccurately, such as the awkward transitional phrases 'From 1998 to 2003... But the Serious injuries...' and 'While Slight injury percent...'. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion is weak, leading to sentences that do not flow logically from one to the next.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical resource is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts to use appropriate subject-specific vocabulary like 'fatal', 'serious', 'slight', and 'injuries', but encounters severe issues with word choice and collocation. Treating absolute numbers as percentages repeatedly (e.g., calling '653' a 'percent') demonstrates a misunderstanding of basic data terminology. There are also inappropriate word forms and lexical inaccuracies, such as writing 'occurred' as 'occured' and 'crime percent happened' instead of total crime figures, which causes some difficulty for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The range of grammatical structures is limited, relying mostly on simple and flawed complex sentences. There are frequent errors in grammar, verb forms, and prepositions that cause strain for the reader. Examples include 'The tables displays' (subject-verb agreement error), 'the most types of injuries that occured... is slight' (tense and agreement issues), and 'showed an high figure' (incorrect article usage). Punctuation and sentence construction are also weak, with run-on ideas and missing commas that hinder readability.
