Great Britain - Gun and Knife Crime statistics - 1998-2007
Student answer (Band 4.0)
The tabular graph illustrates the number of various injuries had been done by gun and knife as a crime in Britain from the year 1998 to 2007.However in lately years this ratio of crime overly increased. Evidently, less injuries done by gun and knife were noted in year between 1998 to 1999.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
You identify the topic and give a broad impression that the figures rose, but the response does not adequately summarise the table. The statement that injuries were lowest in 1998–1999 is supported by the data, yet there is no clear overview of the main pattern, no comparison among fatal, serious and slight injuries, and almost no specific figures. The claim that the crime ratio “overly increased” is vague and does not distinguish the much larger rise in slight injuries from the smaller increase in fatal cases. The response is also far below the required 150 words, leaving the task only minimally addressed. To improve, report the overall rise, highlight the sharp increase in slight injuries and the peak in total cases in 2004–2005, and support these points with selected figures.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5
The response has a basic sequence: it introduces the table, then offers a general comment about recent increases, followed by a statement about the earliest year. However, these ideas are not developed into a clear summary, and the single short paragraph provides little progression or grouping of information. “However” does not establish a clear contrast with the preceding sentence, while “Evidently” introduces a point without explaining its significance. The missing spaces after “2007.” and “However” also make the text harder to read. Organise the response into an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph comparing key figures or trends; use linking words only where the relationship between ideas is clear.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “tabular graph,” “injuries,” and “crime,” and the reader can generally identify the subject. However, the range is narrow and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “injuries had been done by gun and knife” and “this ratio of crime.” “Overly increased” is also not an appropriate way to describe a rise in figures. These expressions make the summary less precise, especially when the task requires comparisons between injury categories. Use standard data-reporting language and accurate collocations, for example, “the table shows the number of injuries,” “the figures increased,” and “the total number of cases.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts more than one sentence pattern, including a contrastive opening with “However” and an introductory adverb in “Evidently.” Nevertheless, control is uneven. In “the number of various injuries had been done,” the passive construction is not formed appropriately for this meaning, and “in year between 1998 to 1999” has problems with articles and the preposition pattern. The first sentence also shifts awkwardly from “illustrates” to “had been done.” Punctuation is inconsistent: there is no space after the full stop before “However,” and the opening sentence runs directly into it. Practise simple, accurate reporting structures first, such as “The table shows…” and “The figure rose from… to…,” then add comparisons using correctly formed clauses.
