Student answer (Band 5.5)

The table chart below depicts the amount of detrimental, serious and minor injuries in Great Britain as a result of gun and knife crimes in between the period of 1998 to 2007. It also shows the rise in percentage of each injury in the time frame.

Overall, between the timeline of 2004 to 2005 the total number of injuries is the highest whilst in the starting years the amount of injuries occured is the lowest. It is clear that slight and minor injuries tend to occupy a large portion percentage and fatal injuries were comparitively the lowest.

To be specific, in the initial years of the time period mentioned the injuries were not too much with a total of only 864 with only 49 fatal injuries. In the remaining time frame the injuries tend to increase dramatically upto 3821 in total. The percentage calculated here was about 18% for the fatal injuries and 194% for the serious ones, in the year 2005 and 2006 the injuries number exceeded for about exactly 3821 which is recorded to be the highest. Now if we observe it is evident that the fatal injuries were the least shown here in the given time frame not more than 95 and this was in the year 2001 and 2002. generally the slight injuries were more than the serious and fatal ones, The percentage recorded for the slight injuries is 405% which is the highest among all.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the broad pattern that injury totals rose and that slight injuries were the most numerous, while fatal injuries were the least common. You also include relevant figures such as 864 at the start, 95 fatal injuries at their peak, and the percentage increases. However, the overview is incomplete and some details are inaccurate: the highest total was 3,912 in 2004–05, not 3,821 in 2005–06, when the total was 3,821. The table gives percentage increases of 18% for fatal, 194% for serious, 405% for slight and 342% overall, but the response does not clearly report the overall increase. Develop the main trends more fully and distinguish the peak from the later decline.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic paragraph structure, moving from an introduction and overview to supporting details, and phrases such as “Overall” and “To be specific” signal the intended stages. However, progression within the final paragraph is difficult to follow: it moves from the initial total to percentage changes, then to the 2005–06 total and the fatal-injury peak, before returning to slight injuries. Some links are also unclear, particularly “The percentage calculated here” and “Now if we observe.” Organise the details by trend or category, and use precise references to show which year and figure each statement concerns. This would make the comparisons easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant vocabulary, including “fatal,” “serious,” “percentage,” and “total,” and attempt alternatives such as “minor” and “slight.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for describing this table. “Table chart” is redundant, “detrimental” does not mean fatal, and “injuries number exceeded for about exactly” is awkward and unclear. “Rise in percentage” also suggests a changing percentage over time rather than the reported overall increases. Spelling errors such as “occured” and “comparitively” further reduce accuracy. Prefer standard, precise terms such as “number of injuries,” “accounted for,” and “increased by,” and avoid substituting synonyms when they change the meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast with “whilst” and a conditional-style phrase beginning “if we observe.” However, errors in sentence construction and punctuation are frequent enough to make some statements hard to interpret. For example, “in between the period of 1998 to 2007” combines incompatible prepositions, while “the injuries number exceeded for about exactly 3821” has an unclear grammatical structure. The sentence beginning “Now if we observe” also runs into a comma splice before “generally.” Work on accurate time expressions (“between 1998 and 2007”), complete sentence structures, and punctuation between independent clauses. Shorter, controlled sentences would help communicate the data clearly.
