Student answer (Band 6.0)

The table gives the statistics of fatal, serious and slight injuries due to gun and knife crime in Great Britain from 1998 to 2007 with the percentage of their increase.

Overall, the total number of injuries kept increasing over the years although their percentage increase was lower than just the slight injuries but higher than the others. The percentage increase of fatal injuries is the lowest after the serious injuries. The highest percentage increase is observed in slight injuries.

The number of fatal injuries fluctuated over the years from 1998 to 2007 with an increase rate of 18%. The amount of serious injuries steadily increased at a rate of 194% throughout the years from 1998 to 2007. However, the count of serious injuries leveled at 476 in 2005 and after that till 2007 the numbers are missing.

Starting at a count of 653 in 1998, the amount of slight injuries kept doubling over the years as it reached its peak of 3296 in 2005 and from 2006 to 2007 its amount is not mentioned. It percentage of increase from 1998 to 2007 is 405% which is the highest among all. Finally, the number of total injuries started at 864 in 1998 and was last observed to be 3821 in 2005. Its rate of increase is 342% and the number of total injuries from 2006 to 2007 is also missing.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover the main categories and provide an overview, noting that slight injuries had the largest percentage rise and fatal injuries the smallest. Most figures you cite match the table, including the starting and final available totals and the 18%, 194%, 405% and 342% increases. However, some comparisons are unclear or inaccurate: serious injuries did not steadily increase, since they fell from 437 to 411 before rising to 476, and 476 is the 2005–06 figure, not simply “in 2005.” The table gives no serious, slight or total figures for 2006–07, but does give 58 fatal injuries for that year. Also, “kept doubling” overstates the pattern. Select and describe these trends more precisely to make the overview and supporting details clearer.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing the injury categories. This makes the information easy to locate, and transitions such as “Overall,” “However,” and “Finally” help signal the sequence. However, the organisation is somewhat mechanical because the body moves through each category in turn without consistently grouping related trends or making comparisons. Some references are also unclear: “their percentage increase” could refer to the injuries or the total, while “after that” requires the reader to infer which year is meant. The final paragraph repeats that later figures are missing. Grouping the main trends and using precise year references would create smoother progression and stronger cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “fluctuated,” “steadily increased,” “percentage increase,” and “reached its peak,” so the main trends are generally understandable. There are also attempts to vary expressions for quantities, such as “number,” “amount,” and “count.” Some choices are imprecise or unnatural, however: “kept doubling” does not accurately describe the slight-injury figures, and “leveled at 476” is not a natural description of the series. “It percentage” is an incorrect word form, and “rate of increase” is less precise than “percentage increase” in this context. Use standard collocations such as “the figure rose,” “the number of cases,” and “increased by” to report the data more accurately and naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “although” and “as,” and most sentences communicate the intended meaning. Some grammatical errors remain. In “It percentage of increase,” the possessive form should be “Its percentage increase”; in “from 2006 to 2007 its amount is not mentioned,” the pronoun reference and tense are awkward. The sentence beginning “However, the count of serious injuries…” also has an unclear time construction in “after that till 2007.” There are occasional issues with articles and phrasing, as in “with an increase rate of 18%.” Keep the sentence structures varied, but check pronoun forms, tense consistency, and how time expressions connect to the main clause.
