Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
You identify the table’s subject and make a few relevant comparisons, including that slight injuries were the most numerous and fatal injuries the least, and that total injuries peaked at 3,912 in 2004–05 and were lowest at 864 in 1998–99. However, the overview is unclear and some claims are inaccurate: the table gives counts, not percentages for each year, and the serious-injury figure does not continue into 2006–07 because that entry is missing. The statement that crime “stops” is unsupported. Several important trends and the reported percentage increases are not explained. The response is also 13 words below the 150-word minimum; the 21 words copied from the task prompt were not counted. Develop a clearer overview and accurately describe the main changes.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs beginning “Looking first” and “Turning to total injuries.” These signposts help the reader recognise the intended topics, and the comparison between the highest and lowest totals gives the final paragraph a clear focus. However, progression is limited: the overview mainly describes the table’s layout rather than summarising its main trends, and the discussion of serious injuries is mixed with an unsupported explanation about crime stopping. Connect each paragraph to a distinct feature and arrange details in a clearer sequence. Some linking phrases, such as “Furthermore” and “Meanwhile,” are used, but relationships between ideas are not always clear.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “fatal,” “serious,” “slight,” “percentage,” and “noticeable contrast,” so the reader can identify the subject and comparisons. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or awkward for describing this table. For example, “highest in percentage” confuses percentages with injury counts, while “moderate increase” is vague and “stops of gun and knife crime” does not accurately describe the missing data. Spelling and word-form slips such as “informationn,” “perccentage,” and “untill” also reduce precision. Use terms such as “number,” “figure,” “rose,” and “fell” consistently, and check spelling before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, including “Furthermore, in 1998-1999 was the lowest…” and the sentence beginning “Meanwhile.” However, sentence construction is often faulty, and errors sometimes make the intended meaning difficult to follow. For instance, “the row and columns shows” has subject–verb disagreement, while “Looking first at slight injury, were the highest” is an incomplete construction without a clear subject. The opening also needs spacing after commas, and “as compare to other” has an incorrect grammatical form. Practise building complete sentences with an explicit subject and verb, and check agreement, articles, and punctuation. More accurate control of these basic patterns would make your comparisons much clearer.
