IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table shows the number of fatal, serious and slight injuries resulting from gun and knife crime in Great Britain from 1998 to 2007 and the percentage increase for each degree of injury over the period.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Great Britain - Gun and Knife Crime statistics - 1998-2007

Great Britain - Gun and Knife Crime statistics - 1998-2007

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The given data represents the injuries resulting from gun and knife in England categorized into fatal, serious and slight injuries and the rate of increase in these injuries over the years 1998- 2007.

Overall, as the years pass, the rate of injuries spiked with slight injuries being the most reported one.

As can be seen from the table, it is clear that every year the crime statitics increased, with the rate of slight injuries resulting from gun and knife crimes were 5 fold in the year 2005- 2006 (3296) compared to 1998- 1999 (653). While slight injuries remained the topmost reported injuries, serious injuries remained the second position followed fatal injuries. In the year 2006- 2007, the only reported crime injury was fatal injury with 58 cases, which is considerably high considering thr impact of injury.

In addition to that, there was a increase in the percentage of injuries over the decade from slight injuries with 405, serious injuries with a rate of 194 and fatal being 18. In total, the percent was 342.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the broad pattern that slight injuries were the most numerous and include several relevant figures, such as 653 in 1998–99 and 3,296 in 2005–06. However, the account only partially reports the table’s main features, which limits how fully it addresses the task. The claim that “every year the crime statistics increased” is inaccurate: totals fell from 3,912 in 2004–05 to 3,821 in 2005–06, and fatal injuries also fluctuated. The statement that only fatal injuries were reported in 2006–07 is unsupported; the table gives dashes for serious and slight injuries, not zero values. The overview is also too general. Highlight the overall rise, the sharp increase in slight injuries, and the fluctuations or missing final-year data accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a brief overview, a paragraph describing figures, and a final paragraph on percentage increases. This gives the reader some organisation, and phrases such as “Overall” and “In addition to that” signal transitions. However, progression is not consistently clear. The discussion moves from annual trends to injury rankings and then to the final year without a well-defined comparison, while the last paragraph repeats the increase idea rather than developing a distinct feature. “While” also introduces a contrast that is not fully explained. Group the information more logically—for example, describe the overall trend and key fluctuations first, then compare injury categories and percentage changes—and use linking phrases to clarify relationships.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “fatal,” “serious,” “slight,” “percentage,” and “compared to,” so the topic is generally understandable. There are also attempts at more descriptive language, such as “spiked” and “topmost.” However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for describing a table. “The rate of injuries” is not the same as the number of cases, and “the rate of slight injuries … were 5 fold” is awkward. “Topmost reported injuries” and “the impact of injury” are also imprecise in context. Spelling errors such as “statitics” further reduce control. Prefer precise terms such as “number of cases,” “accounted for,” and “rose to around five times the initial figure.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mixture of simple statements and longer sentences, including a comparison with “While slight injuries remained…” and a clause beginning “As can be seen from the table.” However, complex constructions are often faulty, and errors recur in basic sentence patterns. For example, “the rate … were 5 fold” has subject–verb disagreement, while “there was a increase” uses the wrong article. The sentence beginning “While slight injuries…” is a fragment because it lacks a main clause, and “serious injuries remained the second position followed fatal injuries” has an incomplete grammatical pattern. These issues sometimes make relationships between ideas difficult to follow. Build accuracy with complete sentences, check singular/plural agreement and articles, and use simpler comparisons before adding subordinate clauses.
