Student answer (Band 6.0)

The table provides information about the amount of fatal, serious and slight injuries resulting from gun and knife crime and the percentage increase for each degree of injury from 1998 to 2007.

Overall, it is clear that the total amount of injuries increased over the period. Slight injuries accounted for the largest proportion out of all three degrees of injury which surged rapidly over the period. Cases for serious injuries also increased with the passage of years. In contrast, fatal injuries remained comparatively low and fluctuated throughout the period.

The total number of injuries in the year [redacted phone] were 864, out of which 653 were slight injuries, 162 serious and 49 fatal injuries. The figure then rose to 1877 during the year [redacted phone] , out of which slight injuries accounted for 1390, 392 serious injuries and 95 fatal injuries. During [redacted phone] the total figure rose to 2179 with an increasing total amount of 302 in a year.

The total amount of injuries in the year [redacted phone] were 2367, out of which slight injuries contributed an amount of 1862, 437 serious injuries and 68 fatal injuries. The figure for slight injuries peaked during [redacted phone] reaching a figure of 3424. The figure then declined gradually to 3296 in the following year. The amount for serious injuries reached 437 in the year [redacted phone], before declining to 411 in the coming year and finally reaching the highest amount of 476 during the year [redacted phone]. The number of fatal injuries fluctuated throughout the period where it peaked during [redacted phone] reaching an amount of 95. Subsequently, the figure dropped to 58 in [redacted phone]. The table shows the percentage increase in all of the three degrees of injury and also in total amount. With 18% increase in fatal injuries, 194% accounted by serious injuries , 405% by slight injuries and a total of about 342 % increase in total amount of injuries.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You provide a relevant overview, identifying the overall rise in injuries, the dominance of slight injuries, and the comparatively low, fluctuating fatal figures. You also include several accurate values and the percentage increases. However, some important details are incomplete or unclear: the total rises to 3,912 in 2004–05 and then falls to 3,821, but this major change is not clearly highlighted. The statement that slight injuries “surged rapidly over the period” also needs qualification because the sharp jump occurs particularly in 2004–05. There is a factual inconsistency when you say serious injuries reached 437 in 2003–04, then later describe 476 as the highest; 476 is correct, but the earlier figure is 437. More precise selection and comparison of the main trends would strengthen the summary.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction and overview are followed by paragraphs describing the figures, and the information is generally presented in chronological order. Linking expressions such as “In contrast,” “Subsequently,” and “before declining” help show relationships between trends. However, the body is somewhat repetitive, with several sentences repeating “the total amount/figure” and listing values in a similar pattern. The final sentence about percentage increases feels appended rather than integrated into the comparison. Some references, such as “the figure” and “the amount,” are not always immediately specific. Grouping the data by injury category or by the main changes, and using clearer references, would make progression more controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing data, including “accounted for,” “fluctuated,” “peaked,” “declined,” and “percentage increase.” These choices communicate the main trends, and the meaning remains clear. However, some wording is repetitive or imprecise: “amount” is used repeatedly for counts, while “the figure” appears often without specifying which category it refers to. Phrases such as “with the passage of years” and “reaching an amount of 302 in a year” are less natural in this context. There are also awkward collocations, including “contributed an amount of 1862.” More precise terms for counts and changes, used with greater variety, would improve the fluency and accuracy of the description.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “out of which,” “before,” and “where,” and most sentences are understandable. Some grammatical errors remain. For example, “The total number … were 864” has subject–verb disagreement; “The total amount … were 2367” repeats this problem. The phrase “with an increasing total amount of 302 in a year” is structurally unclear, and the comma spacing in “2001-2002 ,” and “serious injuries ,” is incorrect. There are also inconsistent constructions when reporting figures, such as “reaching a figure” and “reaching an amount.” Check agreement with singular subjects such as “number” and “figure,” and proofread punctuation and sentence structure to make the writing more controlled.
