Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You identify the table’s subject and attempt an overview, noting that the total was highest in 2004–05 and lowest in 1998–99. However, the overview is not fully accurate: the highest total is 3,912 in 2004–05, but the lowest is 864 in 1998–99, and the claim that all injury categories increased gradually after 2000 overlooks several fluctuations. The statement about fatal injuries reaching 95 in 2001–02 is relevant, but the final comparison of serious and slight injuries is unclear and misdates their peaks. The response also contains only 91 words, below the required 150, so it leaves much of the data and comparisons unreported. Include key figures and describe the overall changes more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has a basic structure: an introduction, an overview, and a final paragraph with selected details. This gives the reader some sense of how the information is organised. However, the progression is limited because only a few observations are included, and the final paragraph does not clearly connect its claims to particular years or categories. The long overview sentence combines several comparisons, making the relationships difficult to follow; for example, the contrast between the highest and lowest totals is grammatically and logically tangled. Use separate sentences to report the overall pattern and then compare fatal, serious, slight, and total figures. Clearer links such as “By contrast” or “Meanwhile” would help, provided each comparison is explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for describing a table, including “statistics,” “total,” “fatal,” “serious,” and “slight,” so the topic is generally recognisable. The range is nevertheless limited, and several choices or combinations are awkward enough to reduce clarity. “Fatal injuries were increased by the number 95” does not naturally express that the figure reached 95, while “the second highest number were the serious and slight” is difficult to interpret. “Crime rate of injuries” also confuses the number of injuries with a rate. Aim for precise reporting verbs and collocations, such as “stood at,” “rose to,” and “accounted for,” and use category names consistently when making comparisons.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response includes simple statements and an attempt at a longer sentence, but the range is limited and errors occur frequently. In the overview, “Overall, period between 2004 and 2005 has…” is missing an article and uses an unsuitable tense; “when it was started in 1998 and 1999” also creates an unclear clause. The sentence beginning “Fatal injuries were increased” uses an incorrect passive construction, and “the second highest number were” has subject–verb disagreement. Punctuation and capitalisation are inconsistent, particularly the lowercase “fatal” after a full stop. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and build comparisons in shorter, complete sentences before attempting longer structures.
