Great Britain - Gun and Knife Crime statistics - 1998-2007
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The table illustrates the number of injuries came from gun and knife crime in Great Britain between 1998 and 2007. It also depicts the increase in percentage for each level of injury over the same years. The categories of the crime are fatal, serious, slight and these are calculated in total crime that have been committed over the same period.
Overall, crime rate have been increased rapidly among all categories over the years. The lowest rate of crime was between 1998 and 1999. Whereas, the highest rate of crime is from 2004 to 2005. Then the crime rate decreased between 2005 and 2007.
From 1998 to 2005, the total number of crime have increased dramatically. Total 864 crime had been occured between 1998 and 1999. It increased sharply till 2005. But from 2005 to 2006, the total number of crime (3821) slightly decreased. Therefore, total percentage increase from 1998 to 2007 is 342%.
There were some fluctuations among the number of crime in categories. From 1998 to 2002, the number of crime in all categories increased steeply. However, from 2002 to 2007, the number of fatal crime decreased gradually and some fluctuations were shown in the other categroies (serious, slight). The percentage of increment over the years showed fatal (18%), serious (194%) and slight (405%).

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the table’s subject and give an overview of the broad rise in recorded injuries, the peak in 2004–05, and the subsequent fall in the total. You also report several percentage increases accurately. However, the account is only partly complete: the table has no serious, slight or total figures for 2006–07, so describing a decline “between 2005 and 2007” is unsupported. The total percentage increase of 342% applies through 2005–06, not 2006–07. Some category trends are also imprecise: fatal injuries fluctuate rather than decrease steadily after 2001–02, while serious injuries generally rise to 476 by 2005–06. Select the main comparisons more precisely and distinguish the final year with missing data.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear four-paragraph structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs of detail. This makes the information easy to locate, and transitions such as “Overall,” “However,” and “Therefore” help signal relationships between points. Some progression is less clear because the overview says the rate decreased “between 2005 and 2007,” while the detail discusses only the total through 2005–06; the table does not provide the later total. The repeated use of “crime rate” and “number of crime” also blurs whether you mean incidents, injuries, or totals. Improve cohesion by grouping the total trend separately from the injury categories and using precise references to the years and measures.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant vocabulary for describing data, including “increased sharply,” “fluctuations,” “categories,” and “percentage increase.” This gives the reader a basic account of the main movements. However, the range is limited and several repeated or inaccurate expressions reduce precision: “crime rate” is used for counts of injuries, and “number of crime” is repeated where “number of injuries” or “total” would be clearer. There are also word-form and spelling problems, such as “occured” and “categroies,” and “percentage of increment” is an unnatural collocation. Aim for a wider set of accurate terms for totals, injury severity, rises, falls, and variation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including contrast clauses beginning “Whereas” and “However,” and most of the intended meaning can be understood. Nevertheless, errors occur frequently in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “crime rate have been increased” should be “the crime rate increased” or “has increased,” while “the total number of crime have increased” requires singular agreement and a more suitable noun. “The categories … are fatal, serious, slight” also needs clearer grammatical framing, such as “The injury categories are fatal, serious and slight.” Some fragments, including “Whereas, the highest rate…,” interrupt otherwise understandable sentences. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and complete clause structures.
