Great Britain - Gun and Knife Crime statistics - 1998-2007
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The chart illustrates changes in the number of fatal, serious, and slight injuries resulting from gun and knife crime in Great Britain between 1998 and 2007. The percentages for each injury type rise over time.
Overall, it is clear that the serious and slight crime rates increase over the period; however, there are some ups and downs in the ratio of fatal injuries over time. Serious and slight injuries have the highest percentages throughout the table.
To begin with, the fatal injuries resulting over the period from 1998 to 2002 showed slight changes, from 49 to 95. After some years, the number of fatal injuries gradually went down to 49 from 2001 to 2006; by 2007, the amount had increased to 58, while the overall percentage over the period remained constant at 18%. Moreover, after the continuous changes in serious and slight injuries the both amount reachead to peak 7 years in 1998 and 1999 the rate of serious was 162 while the ratio of the slight has 653 but in last after 7 years the ratio of the serious was observed which is 476 and the slight injuries ratio was 3296, however the percenrage of both is remined calm and was experinced 194 of serious and 405 of slight injuries.
In contrast, the total and the final count of overall categories were found to be about 3821, while the overall percentage is 342

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the subject and include an overview, noting that serious and slight injuries generally rose while fatal figures fluctuated. However, the overview is not fully accurate: the claim that serious and slight injuries had the “highest percentages throughout” is unclear, and the table gives percentage increases rather than yearly rates. Several details are also misreported or difficult to follow. For example, 476 is the serious-injury figure for 2005–06, not the final year, and 3,296 is the slight-injury figure for that year; the 2006–07 figures for these categories are unavailable. The total of 3,821 is for 2005–06, not a final count across all categories. Select key trends accurately and compare the starting and ending figures clearly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has a basic paragraph structure, moving from an introduction and overview to details, and phrases such as “Overall,” “To begin with,” and “In contrast” show an attempt to guide the reader. However, progression becomes difficult to follow in the long third paragraph, where fatal, serious, and slight figures are combined in one sentence and the time references are confusing. The final sentence introduces the total without explaining its comparison or linking it clearly to the preceding information. Some linking expressions do not accurately signal the relationship between ideas. Organise the body into clearer comparisons—for example, one paragraph on fatal injuries and another on serious and slight injuries—and use time markers consistently.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “fatal,” “serious,” “slight,” “gradually,” and “peak,” and you attempt to describe change with phrases such as “went down” and “increased.” However, word choice and collocation are often imprecise or repetitive, which sometimes makes the data hard to interpret. “Crime rates” and “ratio” are not suitable for these injury counts, while “the both amount” and “the ratio of the slight” are awkward expressions. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “reachead,” “percenrage,” and “experinced.” Use precise terms such as “number,” “figure,” and “percentage increase,” and check spelling and natural phrasing when editing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and longer sentences, and some are understandable, such as “By 2007, the amount had increased to 58.” However, complex sentences are often poorly controlled, and errors can make relationships between figures unclear. Examples include “after the continuous changes in serious and slight injuries the both amount reachead to peak” and “the ratio of the serious was observed,” where sentence structure and grammatical patterns are faulty. There are also problems with articles and agreement, as in “the both amount,” and punctuation is missing around some introductory clauses. Build shorter, complete sentences first, then add subordinate clauses carefully; check that each sentence has a clear subject and verb and that time references match the figures.
