Student answer (Band 5.5)

The table chart below provides data on the number of individuals in Britain having detrimental, serious and minor injuries occuring from gun and knife crimes between the period of 1998 to 2007. It also shows the increase in percentage for each type of injury over the time frame.

Overall, it is clear that a significant number of people had slight or minor injuries and a moderate number of individuals had serious injuries resulting from the gun and knife crimes. The percentage increase is the highest in slight inuries.

To be specific, in the initial years 1998 and 199 the total number of injuries were only 864; however, it began to increase slightly and reached 3821 by the years 2005 and 2006. If we observe, the number of fatal imjuries were the lowest while the slight injuries were the highest. The total number gradually increased year by year. The fatal injuries at first were the lowest and it experienced fluctuations over the period mentioned. The fatal injuries by the final year 2006 and 2007 were only 58. Furthermore, the percentage increase was only 18% for the fatal injuries over the period. Moreover, the percentage increase was 194% for the serious injuries and 405% for the minor injuries. The total percentage increase over the time is 342%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the main broad patterns: slight injuries were the most numerous, fatal injuries the fewest, and the total rose substantially before reaching 3,821 in 2005–06. You also report the percentage increases accurately. However, the overview is limited and does not clearly describe the changing totals or the notable rise in slight injuries in 2004–05. Some details are imprecise: the first period is 1998–99, not “1998 and 199,” and the total did not increase steadily, since it fell from 3,912 to 3,821 in 2005–06. The response also gives little account of serious-injury figures. Select and compare the key trends more precisely, including the final available figures and the fluctuation in totals.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview and a body paragraph, and it moves from general patterns to figures. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “To be specific,” and “Furthermore” help signal the stages of the report. However, progression is weakened by repetition: the point that fatal injuries were the lowest is made twice, and the total’s rise is described without acknowledging its final decline. “If we observe” is an awkward transition, while “Moreover” and “Furthermore” connect figures but do not establish a clear comparison. Group the information by trend—for example, totals and slight injuries together, then serious and fatal injuries—and use references that make each comparison easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of topic vocabulary, including “percentage increase,” “fatal injuries,” “fluctuations,” and “time frame,” so the main information is generally understandable. However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for a data report. “Table chart” is redundant, “detrimental” does not mean an injury category, and “minor” is less precise than the table’s label “slight.” There are also spelling errors, including “occuring,” “inuries,” and “imjuries,” which reduce accuracy. Some phrases are repetitive, particularly “number of individuals” and “injuries.” Use the table’s terminology consistently and choose concise reporting verbs and collocations, such as “the figure rose,” “accounted for,” and “the total reached.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a contrast with “however” and a conditional opening, and most of the intended meaning can be followed. Some sentence-level errors remain. In “the total number of injuries were only 864,” the subject is singular, so the verb should be “was”; “it began to increase” also has an unclear reference. The phrase “by the years 2005 and 2006” is not a well-formed way to identify the period, and “the fatal injuries … were only 58” would be clearer as “the number of fatal injuries was 58.” Punctuation and spacing are inconsistent, and the long final sequence of percentage figures would benefit from clearer sentence boundaries. Check agreement and make pronoun references explicit.
