Great Britain - Gun and Knife Crime statistics - 1998-2007
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The table shows the number of fatal, serious and slight injuries resulting from gun and knife crime in Great Britain from 1998 to 2007 and the percentage increase for each degree of injury over the period.
The first column shows the reporting period. The second, third and forth columns show number of injuries that were fatal, serious and slight respectively due to gun and knife crime. The last columns shows total number of injuries of either type.
The last row shows percentage increase in injuries of either type from the period of 98/99 to 2005/06 or 2006/07. It also includes percentage increase of total injuries during lapse of this period.
Following infirmation can be concluded for this table:
1. The fatal injuries are highest in number during [redacted phone] and minimum in [redacted phone] and [redacted phone].
2. The serious injuries are highest in number during [redacted phone] and minimum in [redacted phone].
3. The slight injuries are highest in number during [redacted phone] and minimum in [redacted phone].
4. The total injuries are highest in number during [redacted phone] and minimum in [redacted phone].

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response identifies several accurate extremes: fatal injuries peaked in 2001–02, serious injuries in 2005–06, and slight and total injuries in 2004–05; it also correctly notes the 1998–99 lows. However, it mainly lists maxima and minima rather than summarising the main trends or comparing the figures, and it gives no meaningful overview of the substantial rise in injuries or the percentage increases shown in the final row. The opening largely repeats the task and explains the table’s columns instead of analysing it. The response is also below the required 150 words: it contains 140 words, with 36 copied from the prompt excluded from the count. Develop the overview and support it with key comparisons and percentage changes.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable sequence: an introduction, an explanation of the columns, and a numbered list of findings. The numbered points make the selected comparisons easy to locate. However, this format does not create a clear progression through the data, and the list reads as separate observations rather than a connected summary. The first two explanatory sentences repeat information already given in the task, while the response lacks a concluding overview that draws the main trends together. The phrase “Following infirmation can be concluded” is also an awkward transition. Group related figures into paragraphs and use clear links to compare changes over time, rather than presenting each maximum and minimum as an isolated point.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary is sufficient to identify the categories and make basic comparisons, with terms such as “fatal,” “serious,” “slight,” “highest” and “minimum” used in relevant ways. However, the range is limited and repetitive, especially through repeated use of “injuries” and “highest in number.” Some word choices and forms are inaccurate or unnatural: “forth” should be “fourth,” “infirmation” should be “information,” and “during lapse of this period” is not an idiomatic way to describe the time span. “Either type” is also unclear because the table distinguishes three injury categories. Use more precise trend language, such as “rose,” “peaked,” and “increased by,” and check spelling and collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
Most sentences communicate their basic meaning, and the response uses both simple statements and some longer structures, including “The last row shows percentage increase…” However, sentence patterns are repetitive, and several grammatical details are inaccurate. For example, “The last columns shows” has a subject–verb agreement error; “shows number of injuries” needs an article or determiner; and “percentage increase in injuries” would be clearer as “the percentage increase in injuries.” The numbered findings also rely on the same construction rather than showing a wider range of comparisons. Aim for accurate articles and agreement, and practise combining related data in complex sentences, for example by contrasting the peak with the starting figure.
