Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Great Britain - Gun and Knife Crime statistics - 1998-2007
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Starting with the period of [redacted phone] in Great Britian, we can initially see the rate of fatal injuries which is 49 and 653 of slight injuries. Even though we feel that this is massive, we should consider the growth rate of injuries resulting from gun and knife each year. The period of [redacted phone] has more injuries ever recorded, consisting of 476 serious injuries and 3296 slight injuries; noticing that the fatal injury has been the same as the initial period. Finally, a major decrease near to non existent can be seen in the period of [redacted phone]. While we can see the naunces between the growth of all the injuries, the most vibrant difference can be seen in the slight injuries varying from 653 in the period of [redacted phone] to 3296 in the period of [redacted phone] marking its end in 2007.Moreover, the percent increase in the total injuries from [redacted phone] is 342

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify several relevant figures, including the initial fatal and slight counts and the 2005–06 serious and slight totals, and you note that fatal injuries were 49 in both 1998–99 and 2005–06. However, the response only partially summarises the table: it gives no clear overview of the main trends across the period and omits important comparisons, such as the rise in serious injuries from 162 to 476 and the peak total of 3,912 in 2004–05. The claim that 2005–06 had the most injuries is inaccurate, and the 2006–07 figures are not a major decrease to near zero; only the fatal count is provided for that year. The percentage increase is also attributed to total injuries, although the table gives 342% for the total through 2005–06. Select the key trends accurately and distinguish missing data from zero values.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response follows a broad chronological order, moving from 1998–99 to 2005–06 and then 2006–07, and uses transitions such as “Finally” and “Moreover.” This gives the reader some sense of sequence. However, the information is presented as one long paragraph, with no clear overview or grouping of the main trends. Several links are unclear: “Finally” introduces a year that is not the endpoint of the available injury data, while “Moreover” adds a percentage figure without explaining how it relates to the preceding comparison. The repeated references to “the period” also make the account feel mechanical. Organise the response into an overview and a paragraph comparing the key figures, using clear references to the relevant injury categories and years.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some task-related vocabulary, including “fatal injuries,” “serious injuries,” “slight injuries,” “growth rate,” and “percent increase,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for a factual report. “Massive” and “most vibrant difference” are subjective rather than precise, while “major decrease near to non existent” does not accurately describe the figures. There is also a spelling error in “Britian,” and “naunces” is not the intended spelling of “nuances.” Aim for neutral, precise language such as “rose,” “reached a peak,” and “accounted for the largest increase,” and check spelling and collocations before finishing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt some longer structures, including “Even though…” and “While…,” and most of the intended meaning can be followed. However, the range is limited, and complex sentences are often awkwardly formed. For example, “Starting with the period of 1998-1999 in Great Britian, we can initially see the rate of fatal injuries which is 49 and 653 of slight injuries” lacks a clear grammatical relationship between the figures. “The period of 2005-2006 has more injuries ever recorded” uses an unsuitable tense and construction, and “marking its end in 2007” is attached unclearly to the preceding clause. Use direct sentence patterns such as “Fatal injuries stood at 49, while slight injuries numbered 653,” and check punctuation and sentence boundaries.
