Great Britain - Gun and Knife Crime statistics - 1998-2007
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The graph shows data of the fatal, serious and slight injuries caused bu gun and knife crimes in Great Britian.
First of all let's talk about fatal injuries as there is an increased number of injuries were reported over the years with [redacted phone] was the year with the highest fatal injury rate and [redacted phone] and [redacted phone] were the years with the lowest number of fatal injuries caused by gun and knife crimes which were 49 injuries in each year. Now if we take a look at serious injuries the graph shows a significant increase in numbers as in [redacted phone] the count of the serious injuries was 162 and in year [redacted phone] the count was 476 which is more than double from [redacted phone]. Moving toward slight injuries the graph shows an incredible increase from 653 to 3821 in 8 years while keeping in mind that the data for serious and slight injuries caused by gun and knife crimes is missing.
If we analyse the data we can see 18 percent increase in the fatal injuries and if we take a look at slight and serious injuries it is more disturbing that 194 percent of increase in serious injuries was recorded and 405 percent of increase in slight injuries was recorded. And if we take an average of all these injuries the figure is 342 percent icrease in all these injuries in 9 years and are still inceasing.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify several relevant patterns, including the fatal-injury peak in 2001–2002, the low figures of 49 in two years, and the overall rise in serious and slight injuries. However, the response only partly fulfils the task because it lacks a clear overview of the main trends and gives limited comparisons across the period. The statement that slight injuries rose “from 653 to 3821” uses the 2005–2006 total rather than the slight-injury figure of 3,296; the 3,821 figure is the total for that year. You also say data for serious and slight injuries is missing, although figures are provided through 2005–2006. Focus on accurate category-specific comparisons and summarise the overall pattern clearly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has some organisation: it moves from fatal to serious and slight injuries, then discusses percentage increases. This gives the reader a basic route through the information. However, the progression is weakened by conversational transitions such as “First of all let’s talk about” and “Now if we take a look,” which make the report sound like spoken commentary. The final paragraph repeats figures already mentioned rather than drawing the key trends together, and the sentence about missing data interrupts the discussion of slight injuries. Use a concise overview followed by logically grouped comparisons, and make links between ideas more precise rather than relying on repeated introductory phrases.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary such as “fatal injuries,” “significant increase,” and “percentage increase,” so the topic is generally clear. However, the range is limited and several expressions are repetitive or imprecise, including repeated use of “the count” and “take a look.” Some word choices also affect accuracy: “graph” is used although the visual is a table, and “average” is not the right term for the overall percentage increase. Spelling errors such as “Britian,” “bu,” “icrease,” and “inceasing” are noticeable. Aim for more precise reporting language and check spelling carefully; for example, use “figure,” “rose,” and “overall increase” where appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt longer sentences and use time references to compare years, but complex structures are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences difficult to follow. For example, “there is an increased number of injuries were reported” combines incompatible verb structures, while “with 2001-2002 was the year” has an incorrect clause pattern. The sentence beginning “Moving toward slight injuries” also becomes unclear because several ideas are joined without a sound grammatical structure. Use simpler, controlled sentences when reporting figures, and check subject–verb agreement, articles, and clause construction. A clearer pattern would be: “Fatal injuries peaked at 95 in 2001–2002, then fell to 49 in 2005–2006.”
