IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table shows the number of fatal, serious and slight injuries resulting from gun and knife crime in Great Britain from 1998 to 2007 and the percentage increase for each degree of injury over the period.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The table explains the concequences of the the use of harmful instruments resulting to increase in the crime over the period of 8 years. All three injury categories (Fatal, Serious and Slight) seems to have increasing rate but we can see the sharp increase during the period of [redacted phone] but in the final years, we can see some reduction in crimes in total. The most concerning number comes in the slight injuries. It is increased by more than 400 percent.

The increase in the number of crimes can be related to the increasing number of population during those period. It can also be assumed that the availability of the gun and knives became availalble more easily.

If we go towards the numbers in each of the injuries, "Fatal" has the lowest whereas "Slight" has the higest number of crimes. This can be directly correlated to the punishment considering fatal injuries has the higest degree of punishment whereas slight injuries has the lowest.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the broad pattern that injuries rose and note that slight injuries were the largest category, which are relevant features. However, the response only partially summarises the table: it gives no specific figures, omits the overall increase from 864 to 3,821, and does not describe the different trends across categories. For example, fatal injuries peaked at 95 in 2001–02 before falling and ending at 58, while serious injuries rose to 476 by 2005–06. The claim that all categories increased is too general, and the suggested explanations about population, weapon availability and punishment are not supported by the table. Focus on the data and give a concise overview supported by key comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has some organisation: it begins with a general statement, then discusses possible causes, and ends by comparing injury categories. Basic linking phrases such as “If we go towards the numbers” help signal a shift. However, the progression is not consistently focused on summarising the table, and the paragraph about population and weapon availability interrupts the data description with speculation. The overview and supporting details are not clearly separated, and there are few precise comparisons to connect the figures. Organise the response into an introduction, an overview of the main trends, and a data-focused paragraph comparing categories and years. Use linking expressions to show actual contrasts or changes rather than relying on broad transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant vocabulary, including “injury categories,” “sharp increase,” “reduction,” and “correlated,” and the main meaning is generally understandable. There is some range, but several choices are inaccurate or awkward for describing a statistical table: “consequences of the use of harmful instruments resulting to increase in the crime” is unclear, and “crimes” is repeatedly used where the table reports injuries. Spelling errors such as “concequences,” “availalble,” and “higest” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise data-reporting language and natural collocations, such as “the number of injuries rose” or “slight injuries accounted for the largest figure.” Check spelling and avoid repeating general terms when a more exact one is available.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, and the reader can usually follow the intended meaning. However, errors in agreement, articles, and sentence construction occur in several places. For example, “All three injury categories … seems” should use a plural verb, while “It is increased by more than 400 percent” has an unclear pronoun reference and an unsuitable tense for describing the table. The opening sentence also contains a faulty construction, and “during those period” has a number-agreement error. These issues make some statements less clear, even though the overall message remains accessible. Practise accurate present-tense reporting, plural agreement, and clear references to the figures, then proofread each sentence for complete and well-formed clauses.
