Great Britain - Gun and Knife Crime statistics - 1998-2007
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The table chart illustrates the number of injuries resulting from gun and knife crime in Great Britain across three categories-fatal, serious, and slight-between 1998 and 2007, along with the overall totals and percentage increases over the period.
Overall, it is evident that total injuries experienced a substantial upward trend over the decade, nearly tripling from the starting figure.
Representing the vast majority of all cases, slight injuries grew exponentially from 653 incidents in [redacted phone] to 2011 by [redacted phone], making a dramatic increase of roughly 208%.
Serious injuries also saw a significant growth, starting at 162 and climbing steadly to 476 incidents at the end of the period, representing a rise of approximately three times double.
In contrats, fatal injuries were relatively low in number throughout the period. Although fluctuating between a low of 49 in [redacted phone] and a peak of 95 in [redacted phone], they ended at 58 incidents in [redacted phone], showing a modest overall increase of about 36.7%.
In total, combined injuries rose from 864 in [redacted phone] to 3821 in 2006 to 2007, representing an overall of approximately 176.6%

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You provide a relevant overview that total injuries rose substantially, and you identify the dominance of slight injuries and the comparatively low, fluctuating fatal figures. However, several key details are inaccurate or unsupported by the table. Slight injuries are not reported for 2006–2007; the figure 2,011 and the stated 208% increase do not match the data. The table’s percentage increase for slight injuries is 405% through 2005–2006. Serious injuries reach 476 in 2005–2006, but no figure is given for the final year, and the table reports a 194% increase. The total rose from 864 to 3,821, which is about 342%, not 176.6%. More accurate selection and reporting of the figures would make the summary more complete and reliable.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is organised into clear paragraphs, moving from an introduction and overview to separate descriptions of slight, serious and fatal injuries, followed by the total. This gives the reader a generally coherent progression, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Although” and “In total” help signal relationships. The comparison introduced by “In contrast” is also appropriate for distinguishing fatal injuries from the other categories. To make the organisation more effective, group related trends and figures more deliberately, and ensure each paragraph develops a clear comparison rather than presenting isolated claims. The final total sentence would work better as part of the overview or a paragraph comparing the overall rise with the injury categories.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of task-related vocabulary, including “substantial upward trend,” “vast majority,” “fluctuating” and “modest overall increase.” These choices help describe trends and comparisons, and meaning is generally clear. There are, however, some inaccurate or awkward expressions: “table chart” is redundant, “grew exponentially” overstates the pattern, and “a rise of approximately three times double” is not a natural way to express a comparison. “In contrats” is also misspelled, while “an overall of approximately” is an incomplete collocation. Aim for precise, conventional language for describing data, such as “increased by,” “rose to” and “accounted for,” and avoid dramatic terms unless the figures clearly justify them.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of sentence forms, including complex structures such as “Although fluctuating between a low of 49 … and a peak of 95 …, they ended at 58.” Most sentences communicate their main point, and the response shows some control of clauses and punctuation. Some grammatical and sentence-level problems remain. In “Representing the vast majority of all cases, slight injuries grew…,” the opening participle is awkwardly attached to the category rather than clearly describing the data. “Serious injuries also saw a significant growth” uses an unnecessary article, and “representing an overall of approximately 176.6%” is structurally incomplete. Check that introductory phrases attach clearly to the subject and that percentage statements have a complete grammatical form, for example, “an increase of approximately …%.”
