Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You identify the table’s subject and give a broad overview that totals generally rose before falling slightly at the end. You also accurately report the first year’s figures. However, the response addresses the task only minimally: it stops after beginning to describe 1999–2000 and does not summarise the later years or compare the injury categories across the period. The statement that moderate injuries dominated is not supported by the table’s labels, which show slight injuries as the largest category. The response is also 55 words below the required minimum, leaving the main features substantially undeveloped. To improve, complete the summary and report the major trends, including the sharp rise in slight injuries and the increase in serious injuries.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is a basic structure: an opening sentence, an overview, and the start of a detail paragraph. The overview’s reference to an overall rise followed by a slight fall gives the reader some direction. However, the response ends abruptly after “Followed by, 1999 to 2000,” so there is no clear progression through the remaining years or a concluding comparison. Linking phrases such as “Overall” and “Turning first to” are attempted, but “Followed by” is awkwardly attached and does not lead into a complete sentence. Organise the details into a complete sequence, grouping the main trends rather than listing isolated figures, and use transitions to show how each period relates to the next.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant vocabulary for describing data, including “illustrates,” “divided into groups,” “percentage,” and “rose.” These choices make the topic broadly understandable. However, the range is limited and several terms are inaccurate or imprecise: the table says “slight” and “serious,” not “moderate” and “severe,” and “incident outcome numbers” is an awkward description of injury counts. “Increase percentage” and “increase proportion” are also repetitive and unnatural. Spelling errors such as “Britian” reduce accuracy. Use the table’s category labels consistently and choose precise collocations such as “number of injuries,” “percentage increase,” and “the total rose.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts both simple and more extended sentence forms, and the opening sentence communicates the general subject. However, grammatical control is uneven, with errors in agreement, articles, sentence boundaries, and phrasing. For example, “the number of crime went upward” has a singular/plural agreement problem, while “in 1998 to 2007” uses an incorrect preposition pattern. “Turning first to, 1998 to 1999” is punctuated incorrectly, and “Followed by, 1999 to 2000 total numbers rose by 1195” is an incomplete and awkwardly formed sentence. Practise writing complete sentences with clear subjects and verbs, and check agreement and prepositions. A wider range of accurately controlled sentence patterns would make the data easier to follow.
