Great Britain - Gun and Knife Crime statistics - 1998-2007

Great Britain - Gun and Knife Crime statistics - 1998-2007

Student answer (Band 4.5)

From 1998 to 1999 there are multiple ratio increase in the gun and knife crime reported in the great britain.so if we compare the early ratio which is 49 fatal,162 serious,653 slight and in total there are 864 cases reported to the gun and knife statistics chart.and if we compared to the 2005 to 2006 there are almost 49 fatal,476 serious and 3296 slight ,mean in total there are 3821 cases are reported in great brittain according to the gun and knife crime statistics.

so it means that there is a lot of crime increase in the great brittain ,and the main cause of the crime increasing is the country law and enforcement and so it is understood that in great brittain, the goverment policies are very bad to control the increase rate of gun and knife crime and unable to make any strict polices to stop the crime in the country.Their police is not doing their job correctly.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response includes some relevant figures, accurately giving the 1998–99 total of 864 and the 2005–06 figures of 49 fatal, 476 serious and 3,296 slight injuries, with a total of 3,821. However, it only minimally summarises the table: there is no clear overview of the main trends or the percentage increases, and most of the response repeats two years’ data. The claim that poor government policies and police performance caused the rise is not supported by the table, which reports statistics rather than causes. To address the task more fully, identify the overall increase, note that slight injuries were the largest category, and compare the reported percentage rises across injury types.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

There is a basic attempt to compare the first and later years, using phrases such as “if we compare” and “if we compared.” However, the ideas are not arranged into a clear report: the response moves from figures to an unsupported explanation about government and police without a logical transition, and it has no distinct overview or paragraph structure. Repeated linking phrases do not establish a clear progression, while “so it means” introduces a conclusion that does not follow from the table. Organise the response into an introduction, an overview of the main patterns, and a paragraph comparing key figures. Use linking expressions to show genuine relationships between those points.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The response uses some task-related vocabulary, including “fatal,” “serious,” “slight,” “total,” and “cases,” so the reader can identify the categories being discussed. However, the range is basic and repetitive, and several phrases are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “multiple ratio increase,” “early ratio,” and “gun and knife statistics chart.” “Crime increase” is repeated rather than expressed with more precise reporting language. Spelling and word-form errors, including “great brittain,” “goverment,” and “polices,” also weaken control. Build a small set of accurate terms for describing tables and trends, such as “number of injuries,” “rose,” “percentage increase,” and “category,” and check spelling and collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts to connect ideas in longer sentences, but grammatical control is weak and errors frequently make the relationships between ideas difficult to follow. For example, “there are multiple ratio increase” has problems with agreement and number, while “there are 3821 cases are reported” combines incompatible sentence structures. Tense and conditional forms are also inconsistent in “if we compare” and “if we compared,” and sentence boundaries are unclear, particularly where a full stop is followed by “so.” Use shorter, complete sentences first, checking subject–verb agreement and articles; then add a limited range of accurate comparison structures, such as “The total rose from … to …”.
