Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the broad pattern that slight injuries were the most common and fatal injuries the least, and you include several totals and the reported percentage increases. However, the account is only partly developed: the overview does not mention the substantial rise in total injuries or the sharp jump in slight injuries in 2004–05. Some details are inaccurate or unclear: the total rose from 2,367 to 3,912, then fell to 3,821, rather than remaining “nearby” without noting the decline; and the table gives no serious, slight or total figures for 2006–07, so “figures were missed in most categories” is imprecise. The percentage figures are reported, but the 342% total increase is incorrectly called an average. Select the main trends more precisely and distinguish missing data from percentage changes.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overall statement and a detail section, with the figures generally presented in chronological order. This gives the reader a coherent overall route through the information. However, progression within the detail section is sometimes vague or mechanical. Phrases such as “Following this,” “In the next time period” and “During 2003 to 2004” link stages, but the comparisons they introduce are not always clearly expressed; “in the next two years ... increased a bit” does not specify the relevant figures or trend. The final paragraph also combines yearly changes, missing data and percentage increases, making its focus less clear. Group the early steady rise and later sharp increase, then discuss the percentage changes separately, using clearer references to the years and categories.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant task vocabulary, including “fatal,” “serious,” “slight,” “total number” and “percentage,” so the main subject is usually understandable. There is also some attempt to describe change through “increased rapidly” and “dominant.” However, word choice and collocation are often imprecise or repetitive: “the most” and “the least” are less natural than “the most common” and “the least common,” while “remained nearby” does not clearly describe the figures. “The average percentage ... was 342” mislabels the total increase, and “injuries were happened 405%” is not an appropriate expression. Spelling errors such as “ijuries” and “ad” also reduce accuracy. Build a more precise range for describing rises, falls and proportions, and check spelling and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentences, and the overall meaning can usually be followed. However, control is inconsistent, particularly in longer sentences, which limits the range and accuracy. For example, “the total number of injuries increased by 1195” uses a figure as though it were the amount of increase, and “the two years data almost remain on same position” has problems with number, tense, articles and sentence construction. The final sentence, “The average percentage of all injuries was 342,” is also grammatically formed but does not express the intended relationship clearly. Punctuation is uneven, with missing spaces after commas and run-on sequencing in places. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and build shorter comparison sentences before combining them with clauses.
