Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response identifies the subject and gives a broad overview that the total number of injuries increased, which is relevant to the table. However, it stops after only 45 words and does not report the main figures, compare injury categories, or describe the percentage increases. The statement “There are four types of injuries” merely repeats the table’s structure rather than selecting a meaningful feature. The overview is also too general to show the important pattern, such as the sharp rise in slight injuries and the much smaller increase in fatal injuries. The response is 105 words below the required minimum; develop the summary with key comparisons and supporting data.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has a basic, recognisable structure: an introductory sentence is followed by an overview beginning with “Overall”. This gives the limited content some logical order. However, it ends abruptly after “There are four types of injuries”, so there is no developed sequence of details or comparisons. The relationship between the overview and the final sentence is also weak, as the latter adds no supporting information. To improve progression, organise the response into an introduction, a concise overview, and one or two paragraphs grouping the main trends. Use linking language to show contrasts and changes over time, rather than relying on a short opening and an unfinished list-like statement.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses some relevant topic vocabulary, including “fatal”, “serious”, “slight injuries” and “percentage”, and “increased considerably” communicates a general trend. However, the range is very limited because the response is so short, and several choices are inaccurate or awkward: “injuries causing from” does not express the intended meaning, while “percentage raise” is not a natural collocation. The misspelling “injuires” also reduces accuracy. Use precise reporting language such as “injuries resulting from gun and knife crime” and “percentage increase”. A wider range of trend terms, for example “rose sharply”, “remained comparatively low” and “accounted for”, would help describe the data more clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response shows some control of basic sentence forms, including a complex introductory sentence and a separate overview sentence. However, grammatical accuracy is weakened by errors in those sentences. “Between 1998 to 2007” combines two incompatible prepositions; use “between 1998 and 2007” or “from 1998 to 2007”. In “Overall, total number of injuries increased”, the singular count noun needs a determiner: “the total number”. The phrase “injuries causing from” also has an incorrect grammatical construction. The final sentence is grammatically simple and does not develop the information. Practise accurate time expressions, articles and verb patterns, then use a wider mix of sentence structures to compare trends.
