IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table shows the number of fatal, serious and slight injuries resulting from gun and knife crime in Great Britain from 1998 to 2007 and the percentage increase for each degree of injury over the period.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Great Britain - Gun and Knife Crime statistics - 1998-2007

Great Britain - Gun and Knife Crime statistics - 1998-2007

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The table compares the result of gun and knife crimes in Great Britain for over 9 years, which is from 1998 to 2007 and also compares the degree of injury such as fatal, serious and slight, along with percentage increase for each degree of injury over the years. It is evident that there has been a steady increase in the total number of injury over the years.

For each year, the total number of injuries caused by gun and knife crime has been increasing steadily from 1998 to 2006. People who are affected by the crime are mostly with slight injuries.

Over the years, there is no record of fatal and serious injury in the year between 2006 and 2007. In addition, slight injury has been 405 time more than injuries caused in 1998 to 1999. Whereas the least change is fatal injury over the years.

In conclusion, in Great Britain the number of crimes happened due to knife and gun crime is steadily increasing over the years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the table’s subject and give a broad overview that injury totals rose, with slight injuries the most common. However, the account is only partial and includes important inaccuracies. The total did not rise steadily: it increased to 2,367 in 2003–04, jumped to 3,912 in 2004–05, then fell to 3,821 in 2005–06. The 2006–07 row records 58 fatal injuries; the dashes for serious and slight injuries do not support saying there was no record of fatal injuries. Also, 405 is the percentage increase in slight injuries, not a number of times greater. You mention the smallest increase was in fatal injuries, but do not give the relevant comparison or develop the main figures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, two paragraphs of reported features, and a conclusion. Basic linking expressions such as “In addition” and “In conclusion” help signal relationships between ideas. However, progression is limited because the second paragraph repeats the general claim of an increase, and the conclusion largely restates the introduction rather than summarising a distinct key comparison. “Whereas” introduces a fragment rather than a complete contrast, and the relationship between the percentage increase and the injury figures is not made clear. Group the information more purposefully—for example, describe the overall total trend first, then compare injury categories and their percentage changes—and use references that clearly identify which figures you mean.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “fatal,” “serious,” “slight,” “percentage increase,” and “total number.” This gives the reader a basic understanding of the subject. However, the range is limited and several phrases are imprecise or unnatural, which weakens clarity: “the result of gun and knife crimes” does not accurately describe injury statistics, while “405 time more” misrepresents a percentage increase. “Crimes happened due to knife and gun crime” is also awkward and repetitive. Choose precise terms from the table, such as “injuries resulting from gun and knife crime,” and distinguish clearly between a percentage increase and a multiple. Avoid repeating “over the years” when more specific time references are available.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mixture of simple statements and some longer structures, including the opening sentence with “which is from 1998 to 2007” and the sentence beginning “In addition.” Most of the meaning remains understandable, but control is uneven. For example, “the total number of injury … has been increasing” has a number-agreement problem, and “People who are affected by the crime are mostly with slight injuries” is awkwardly constructed. The clause “Whereas the least change is fatal injury” is incomplete as a sentence. There is also inconsistent tense use when describing the table, shifting between “has been,” “there is,” and “has been.” Practise concise comparisons using complete clauses and consistent present-tense reporting, while checking singular and plural forms.
