The given table illustrates the number of fatal, serious and slight injuries resulting from gun and knife crime in Great Britain from 1998 to 2007. It was shown in percentage. Which was increasing for each degree of injury over a period.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response identifies the table’s subject and reports the percentage increases for fatal, serious and slight injuries, including the correct figures of 18%, 194% and 405%. However, it does not adequately summarise the main features of the yearly data: for example, slight injuries rose sharply to 3,424 in 2004–05, while fatal injuries fluctuated rather than steadily declining. The overview’s claim that fatal injuries were “slowly decreasing” is therefore misleading, and the total increase of 342% is not clearly distinguished from the injury categories. The response also says the figures are “from 1998 to 2007,” although the percentage comparison ends in 2005–06 for most categories. At 131 words, it is 19 words below the required minimum; 21 words copied from the prompt were excluded from the count. Include a fuller overview and key yearly comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs reporting percentage comparisons. This gives the reader some organisation, and phrases such as “Overall,” “Likewise” and “On the other hand” signal relationships between points. However, progression is limited because the body paragraphs repeat the same percentage-based approach rather than developing a clear comparison of the table’s yearly figures. The contrast introduced by “On the other hand” is also weak: the 18% fatal increase is not directly opposed to the preceding figures. Some sentence boundaries disrupt the flow, particularly “It was shown in percentage. Which was increasing…” Group related figures and use linking expressions to show meaningful comparisons, rather than relying on a small set of repeated transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The response uses a small range of relevant terms, including “fatal,” “serious,” “slight,” “percentage” and “increasing,” so the topic is generally understandable. However, vocabulary is repetitive and several word-choice or spelling errors reduce precision: “the highest percentage of crime” inaccurately describes the percentage increase, “injuies” and “toral” are misspelled, and “from 1008 to 2007” appears to be a mistaken year. The repeated phrase “with gun and knife” is also awkward and does not clearly describe injuries resulting from these crimes. Use precise terms such as “percentage increase” and “injuries caused by gun and knife crime,” and check spelling and figures carefully. A broader range of trend language would help distinguish rises, fluctuations and comparisons.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response communicates its basic meaning through mostly simple sentence patterns, but its grammatical range is limited and errors recur. The sentence “It was shown in percentage. Which was increasing…” contains a fragment: “Which” cannot begin a complete sentence in this context, and the relationship between the ideas is unclear. In “the number of serious and slight injuries … was rapidly increasing,” the plural categories do not agree naturally with “was”; the sentence also needs a clearer grammatical construction. Several phrases omit necessary articles or prepositions, as in “the highest percentage of crime was slight injuries.” Try combining related ideas in complete sentences, for example, “The percentage increase was greatest for slight injuries, at 405%.” More accurate sentence structure and agreement would make the comparisons easier to follow.
