IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table shows the number of fatal, serious and slight injuries resulting from gun and knife crime in Great Britain from 1998 to 2007 and the percentage increase for each degree of injury over the period.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Great Britain - Gun and Knife Crime statistics - 1998-2007
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The data illustrates the comparison of three different injuries from gun and knife between 1998 to 2017 and percentage of each injury over the time in Great Britian.
Overall, we can see the smallest number of total injuries was recorded from 1998 to 1999, and the highest number was recorded from 2004 ro 2006. Slight injuries have the highest percentage that was increased.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
You identify two relevant overall features: the total was lowest in 1998–99 and highest in 2004–05, and slight injuries had the largest percentage increase. However, the response is far too brief to summarise the table adequately, and it omits nearly all supporting figures and comparisons. The opening also misstates the period as “1998 to 2017”; the table ends in 2006–07, with the percentage comparison running to 2005–06 or 2006–07. “Highest number” is also imprecise because the peak total is 3,912 in 2004–05, not a period extending to 2006. Include the main trends and key values, and clarify the table’s final year and percentage figures.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic, understandable order: it introduces the subject and then gives an overview beginning with “Overall.” This makes the main point easy to locate. However, the answer consists of only two sentences, so there is little development or progression between ideas, and no paragraphing to distinguish an introduction, overview and supporting details. The second sentence groups several claims together without explaining how the injury categories changed over time. To improve, organise the response into clear paragraphs and use a logical sequence: introduce the table, summarise the main trends, then compare selected figures. Linking expressions should connect developed comparisons rather than simply introduce a general statement.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “total injuries,” “slight injuries,” “percentage” and “recorded,” and the meaning is generally recoverable. However, the range is limited and some choices are imprecise or unnatural: “the comparison of three different injuries from gun and knife” does not clearly describe injury severity categories, while “percentage of each injury over the time” is vague. There are also spelling errors in “Britian” and “ro.” Use precise terms such as “injury categories,” “gun- and knife-related crime,” and “percentage increase.” A wider range of accurate language for describing rises, falls and comparisons would help you report the table more clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response uses simple sentence structures that are mostly understandable, including “Overall, we can see…” and “Slight injuries have the highest percentage that was increased.” However, grammatical control is uneven. In the opening, “from 1998 to 2017” does not accurately frame the period shown, and “between 1998 to 2017” would also require a different preposition pattern. The final sentence has an awkward clause structure: “the highest percentage that was increased” should be expressed more directly, for example, “slight injuries showed the largest percentage increase.” The response offers little variety in sentence forms. Practise accurate comparative and trend sentences, and check prepositions and clause construction before submitting.
