Great Britain - Gun and Knife Crime statistics - 1998-2007
Student answer (Band 4.5)
The decipted table shows us information in an elaborative manner about the number of fatal, serious and slight injuries resulting from gun and knife crime in Great Britain from 1998 to 2007 and the percentage increment for each degree of injury over the period.
By overview, It is observed that the ratio of injuries resulting from gun and knife reached to peak point from 2001 to 2002. It was mainly due to lack of technology advances available at that time.
Initially,It is seen that the number of Fatal injuries were slightly less in the period of 1988 to 2000. However,The number of serious and slight injuries were slightly more high. Form 2001 to 2005, The number of injuries started to Increase. In the End ,it is observed that the number of fatal injuries were again decreasing. In the End,the number of fatal injuries were reduced to only 58 and both serious and slight injuries were not seen from 2006 to 2007.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
You identify the subject and include a brief overview, but the response only partially reports the table’s main features. The claim that injuries peaked in 2001–2002 is inaccurate: the total was highest in 2004–2005, at 3,912, and remained high in 2005–2006. The explanation about a “lack of technology advances” is not supported by the data. You also misstate that serious and slight injuries were not seen in 2006–2007; the table gives dashes for these figures, so their values are unavailable, not zero. The response is 127 words, below the 150-word minimum. To improve, give an accurate overview and compare key figures and trends without adding causes the table cannot establish.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is a basic sequence from an introduction to an overview and then a description of changes, and phrases such as “Initially” and “However” show an attempt to connect ideas. However, the response does not progress clearly through the data: it moves between periods without a consistent comparison, and “In the End” is repeated. The overview’s peak claim is also inaccurate, which makes the organisation of the report harder to follow. Paragraphing is limited, and several sentences run together because spacing after punctuation is inconsistent. Group the information into a clear overview and one or two paragraphs comparing the main trends, using time references in chronological order and linking each comparison explicitly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses some topic-relevant vocabulary, including “fatal,” “serious,” “slight injuries,” and “percentage,” so the reader can recognise the subject. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “decipted,” “elaborative manner,” “percentage increment,” and “slightly more high.” “Ratio” is also not an appropriate description of the number of injuries, and “peak point” is redundant. These choices sometimes make the intended meaning less clear. Aim for precise, conventional language for describing tables, such as “the figures show,” “percentage increase,” “rose,” and “reached a peak,” and check spelling and collocations before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more developed sentence forms, for example, “However, the number of serious and slight injuries were…” and “It was mainly due to…”. Nevertheless, grammatical control is inconsistent. Subject–verb agreement is faulty in “the number … were,” and the opening “By overview, It is observed” has an awkward construction and incorrect capitalisation. Punctuation and spacing are also unreliable, as in “Initially,It” and “In the End ,it.” The response relies heavily on similar sentence patterns, limiting its range. Practise accurate clauses with clear subjects and verbs, and proofread agreement, sentence openings, capital letters, and punctuation.
