Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response identifies the table’s subject and includes some relevant figures, such as 49 fatal injuries, 162 serious injuries and 653 slight injuries in 1998–99. However, it only minimally summarises the data: the overview describes the table’s columns rather than its main trends, and several key figures are misreported. For example, the total increase is given as 342 instead of 342%, and the 2005–06 total of 3,821 is omitted. The opening also says the period begins in 1980, although the table starts in 1998. Some comparisons are useful, including the high number of slight injuries, but the account needs a clear overview and accurate selection of the main changes across the years. Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is a basic paragraph structure, with an introduction, a paragraph of figures and a final comparison. The sequence from early years to later years gives the reader some sense of chronology, and “Overall” and “Conversely” attempt to signal relationships. However, the overview does not actually summarise the main trends, and the final paragraph’s “Conversely” does not clearly contrast with the preceding information. Several sentences are crowded with figures, while fragments such as “serious was the second highest degree at 476” interrupt the flow. Improve progression by grouping the data into clear comparisons—for example, early versus later years—and use linking phrases only when their relationship is clear.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The response uses basic vocabulary relevant to the table, including “fatal,” “serious,” “slight,” “total” and “increase.” This allows the reader to recognise the categories being discussed. However, the range is limited and several repeated or inaccurate expressions make the report less clear, such as “degree of injury” for the number of injuries and “percentage gro” for percentage growth. There are also spelling errors, including “colums,” “repectively” and “great britain,” and some awkward combinations such as “slight grow 405%.” Use precise data-reporting language and check spelling and word forms. For instance, “injury figures” and “rose by” would be more natural in this context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts both simple statements and longer sentences, and the reader can understand several of the comparisons. However, grammatical errors occur frequently and sometimes make relationships between figures unclear. The opening has subject–verb disagreement in “The table illustrate,” while “each colums contain” also has agreement and number problems. Sentence boundaries and punctuation are often weak: “serious was the second highest degree at 476. and fatal…” incorrectly begins a new sentence with a lower-case conjunction, and “58.fatal” lacks a space and appropriate punctuation. Articles and prepositions are also inconsistent, as in “in the year of 2002-2003.” Practise accurate sentence patterns for describing figures, with consistent past-tense verbs and clear punctuation.
