Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Great Britain - Gun and Knife Crime statistics - 1998-2007
Student answer (Band 5.5)
This is tabular representation of proportions of fatal, serious and slight injuries resulting from gun and knife crime in Great Britain from 1998 to 2007, along with percentage increase of each degree injury over the period.
Fatal injuries has seen increasing trend from 1998 to 2002 , when the highest 95 deadly encounters were observed. Afterwards, a factuating numbers of deaths are recorded with decrease in numbers on alternate years.
Serious Injuries has rising figures in the period between 1998 to 2007 except twice ocassions when there was slight fall in numbers. The overall 194% rise is evident.
Injuries labelled as slight kept increasing over the years with the most 405% addition in total. A sudden spike was seen from 2005 to 2006 when it tuched largest 3424 number.
Collectively all kinds of injuries increased in the mentioned time period with surge of 342%. In last two years minor injuries havealmost doubled compared to previous years while serious and fatal injuries has only minor changes.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the broad pattern that injuries increased overall and include several relevant figures, such as the fatal-injury peak of 95 and the reported percentage rises. However, some key details are inaccurate or unclear: serious injuries did not rise steadily, since they fell from 416 to 411 and the final year has no figure; the slight-injury peak was 3,424 in 2004–05, not 2005–06; and the total rose by 342% only through 2005–06. The closing comparison that slight injuries “almost doubled” in the last two years is not supported by the table. The response also falls four words short of the 150-word minimum. A clearer overview and more precise reporting of the years and available data would strengthen coverage.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is arranged in a generally understandable sequence: it discusses fatal injuries, serious injuries, slight injuries, and then the total. This gives the reader a basic route through the information, and phrases such as “Afterwards” and “Collectively” help signal transitions. However, the paragraphing and progression are limited, with each category treated in a short, similar statement rather than grouped to highlight meaningful comparisons. Some links are unclear: “In last two years” does not specify which years or explain the missing figures, and “with the most 405% addition in total” makes the relationship between the percentage and the injury count difficult to follow. Use a distinct overview followed by logically grouped details, and make references to years and categories explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “fatal,” “serious,” “slight,” “rising figures,” and “percentage increase,” so the main subject is usually clear. There are also attempts at more varied wording, such as “surge” and “spike.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for describing statistical data: “deadly encounters” refers to incidents rather than injuries, “addition” is not a natural way to describe a percentage increase, and “tuched largest” contains a spelling error and awkward phrasing. “Factuating” and “ocassions” are also misspelled. Aim for precise, conventional terms such as “number of fatal injuries,” “fluctuated,” “rose by,” and “reached a peak.” This would improve clarity without requiring unnecessarily elaborate vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You communicate the main categories and trends using both simple statements and some longer structures, including “Afterwards, a factuating numbers of deaths are recorded with decrease in numbers on alternate years.” However, grammatical control is uneven. There are agreement errors in “Fatal injuries has seen” and “serious and fatal injuries has,” while “when the highest 95 deadly encounters were observed” is an incomplete or awkwardly formed clause. Articles and prepositions are also missing or inaccurate, as in “in last two years” and “between 1998 to 2007.” Punctuation spacing is inconsistent, and the final sentence joins several ideas without clear grammatical boundaries. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and agreement, and use complete, clearly punctuated sentences while retaining some varied sentence structures.
