Student answer (Band 5.0)
The table shows the number of fatal, serious and slight injuries resulting from gun and knife crime in Great Britain from 1998 to 2007 and the percentage increase for each degree of injury over the period.
Overall, the fatal cases are less as compare to slight injuries from ninenteens to twenties.
From 1998 to 1999, the fatal cases scaled were about 49 followed with 162 of serious cases and 653 with slight injuries. Then in early 2000's, fatal scenarios were not growing so much but the ratio of slight injuries increased rapidly with the number of 1066.
Moving ahead in 2005, the the fatal cases were still growing at lesser rate on eventhough the slight injury cases were still growing at an increasing rate. But one thing is noticed in this chart that the serious injury cases were in the same lane of 400's from last four years recording from 2002 to 2006.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the table’s subject and include some relevant figures, such as 49 fatal and 653 slight injuries in 1998–99, and 1,066 slight injuries in 2000–01. However, the response only partially summarises the data: it gives no clear account of the overall rise in total injuries, omits the substantial increase in slight injuries by 2004–06, and does not report the percentage increases. The overview that fatal cases were “less” than slight injuries is too general to capture the main trends, and the claim that fatal cases were still growing in 2005 is not consistently supported by the figures. The response is also below the required 150 words: it contains 117 words, with 36 copied prompt words excluded. Select and compare the key trends, including the totals and percentage changes.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic paragraph structure: an opening, a brief overview, and two paragraphs describing figures over time. Time markers such as “From 1998 to 1999,” “Then in early 2000’s,” and “Moving ahead in 2005” help the reader follow the chronology. However, progression is limited because the account jumps between selected years and does not clearly connect the figures into a complete trend. “But one thing is noticed in this chart” introduces a point awkwardly, while “Then” and “Moving ahead” do much of the linking work. The overview is also too vague to guide the later details. Organise the body around the main patterns—overall totals, injury severity, and the final years—and use clearer links between comparisons.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some task-related vocabulary, including “fatal,” “serious,” “slight injuries,” “increased,” and “recording,” so the topic is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, which sometimes makes the meaning difficult to follow. For example, “fatal cases scaled” does not clearly describe a figure, “the ratio of slight injuries” is not the same as the number of injuries, and “in the same lane of 400’s” is an unsuitable expression for a stable range. There are also spelling and form problems, such as “ninenteens” and “eventhough.” Use precise terms such as “number,” “figure,” “rose,” and “remained around,” and check spelling and collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt a few longer sentence forms, including “From 1998 to 1999, the fatal cases scaled were about 49 followed with 162 of serious cases and 653 with slight injuries.” However, the sentence structure is often faulty, and the limited range makes relationships between figures unclear. Examples include “the fatal cases are less as compare to slight injuries,” where the comparison structure and verb form are incorrect, and “the fatal cases were still growing at lesser rate on eventhough,” which has problems with the comparative construction and clause connection. The repeated use of “the” in “the the fatal cases” also shows weak proofreading. Practise accurate comparative forms and simple reporting structures first, then combine them into longer sentences with controlled clauses and punctuation.
