Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You give a relevant overview that identifies the overall rise in injuries and the dominance of slight injuries, and you include several accurate figures, such as serious injuries increasing from 162 to 476 and the total reaching 3,912 before falling to 3,821. However, coverage is incomplete: fatal injuries are mentioned only vaguely, and the table’s percentage increases (18%, 194%, 405% and 342%) are not reported. The final year’s fatal figure of 58 is also omitted, while the slight-injury comparison ends in 2005–06. The response contains 132 words, below the 150-word minimum; 16 words copied from the prompt were not counted. Develop the key comparisons and include the percentage changes to address the task more fully.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a brief overview and a paragraph comparing injury categories. This gives the reader a general sense of the information, and transitions such as “In comparison” and “On the other hand” help signal contrasts. However, the progression is not always clear. The sentence beginning “To commence with” combines fatal and serious injuries, then repeats “fatal injuries” without clearly explaining their trend. The final sentence also moves from slight injuries to total injuries without a clear separation, and “before experiencing a slight decline” has an unclear reference. Use one paragraph for fatal and serious injuries and another for slight injuries and totals, with clearer links between each comparison.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant vocabulary for describing data, including “increased considerably,” “noticeable increase,” “accounted for the highest number,” and “climbed.” These choices show an attempt to vary the language rather than simply repeat “went up.” However, several inaccurate or awkward expressions reduce precision, such as “penetration ratio rise,” “injuries consequence,” and “recording fatal injuries.” Spelling errors, including “commance,” “fatel,” and “comparision,” are also noticeable. Choose standard terms for the task and check spelling carefully. For example, describe the percentage change as the “percentage increase,” and use “fatal injuries remained relatively low” rather than the unclear phrase in the body.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt a range of sentence forms, including a complex overview sentence and comparisons using “while” and “before.” However, grammatical errors are frequent and sometimes make relationships between ideas difficult to follow. For example, “The number of serious injuries rose from 162 in1998-99 to 476” needs spacing and consistent date formatting, while “There figure increased significantly from 653 in 1998-99. To 3,296” is incorrectly divided into a sentence fragment. The opening also has faulty noun and clause structure: “the number of death, serious and slight injuries consequence.” Improve sentence boundaries, articles and plural forms, and check that each sentence has a complete, clearly connected clause. Accurate simple sentences would help make the data easier to understand.
