Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the broad upward trend and include an overview, but the response only partially reports the table’s main features. Some figures are misinterpreted: 3,821 is the total for 2005–06, not the number of slight injuries, which was 3,296; the 405% increase applies to slight injuries, while the total rose by 342%. The serious-injury increase is given as 194%, but the endpoint is 2005–06, not 2006–07, for which the table provides no serious-injury figure. The overview also calls the rise in serious injuries a rise in “serious crimes.” The final sentence is unfinished, leaving the total trend incomplete. The response is three words below the required minimum. Report the categories and endpoints accurately, and complete the comparison.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph of details. Phrases such as “Overall,” “Looking at the details,” and “In contrast” help signal the direction of the discussion. However, the progression is weakened by unclear comparisons and an unfinished final sentence: “experiencing” has no completed clause, so the reader is left without the intended conclusion about totals. The overview also combines two trends without clearly distinguishing injury categories from the total number of incidents. Organise the details into clearer comparisons, for example, grouping the percentage changes together and then describing the yearly totals. Ensure each sentence is complete and that linking phrases accurately express the relationship between the data.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a reasonable range of trend vocabulary, including “sharp increase,” “rapid increase,” and “uptrend,” and the topic is generally understandable. However, some choices are imprecise or unnatural for describing a table. “Serious crimes” changes the meaning of serious injuries, while “faced rapid increase” and “very concerned the authorities” are awkward collocations. “Graph” is also less accurate than “table” for this visual. There are spelling errors in “recieved” and “injuires,” and repeated use of “increase” limits variety. Choose precise category labels and standard reporting expressions such as “the number of serious injuries rose” or “this increase may have concerned authorities.” Proofreading spelling and collocation would make the description clearer and more appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including a complex overview beginning “Overall, it is clear that…” and a contrast sentence beginning “In contrast.” However, control is uneven, particularly in longer sentences. In “The numbers for serious injuries faced rapid increase … and rises 194%,” the verb form does not agree with the plural subject, and the comparison structure is incomplete. The sentence about slight injuries also joins several ideas without a clear grammatical structure, while the final sentence ends with “experiencing” and is incomplete. There are also article and preposition issues, such as “in United Kingdom” and “compared to 1998-1999 to 2007.” Use complete clauses, check subject–verb agreement, and make comparisons with a clear pattern such as “compared with the figure in 1998–99.”
