Great Britain - Gun and Knife Crime statistics - 1998-2007
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The table shows data about gun and knife crime in Great Britain between 1998 and 2007,categorized by three levels of injury: fatal, serious, slight.
Overall, total crime number increased significantly over the period, with slight injuries making up the largest proportion of all cases. In contrast, fatal injuries remained the lowest throughout the year.
Looking at the main details, total incident started at 864 in 1998-99 and increased every year until reaching a peak of 3912 in [redacted phone]. A similar trend was seen in slight injuries went up sharply from 653 to 3424 in [redacted phone].
On the other hand ,serious injuries grew steadily from 162 in [redacted phone] to 476 in [redacted phone]. Meanwhile fatal injuries showed a relatively small change. They started at 49 reaching a high of 95 in [redacted phone] and ended up at 58 in [redacted phone] showing only an 185 in total.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the main overall pattern: the total rose substantially, slight injuries formed the largest category, and fatal injuries were the smallest. You also include several relevant figures. However, the account is only partial and some details are inaccurate or unclear. The total peaked at 3,912 in 2004–05, not “2005-2005”; slight injuries reached 3,424 in 2004–05, but then fell to 3,296 in 2005–06. The claim that totals increased every year overlooks this later decline. “Only an 185 in total” is not a meaningful or accurate description of the fatal-injury change; the table gives an 18% increase across the period. The response is also 7 words below the required minimum. Cover the final-year movement and report the percentage figures accurately.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph of supporting details. The progression from total cases and slight injuries to serious and fatal injuries is easy to follow, and phrases such as “Overall,” “In contrast,” and “Meanwhile” help signal relationships. However, some links are awkward or unclear. “A similar trend was seen in slight injuries went up sharply” combines two sentence patterns, while “On the other hand” does not express a clear contrast between the serious-injury trend and the preceding information. The final sentence also joins several points without clearly separating the peak, endpoint, and percentage change. Use more precise transitions and organise the figures so each comparison is easy to track.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “categorized,” “proportion,” “peak,” “steadily,” and “relatively small change.” These choices help describe categories and trends, and the meaning is generally clear. Some expressions are imprecise or unnatural, however: “total crime number” would be better expressed as “total number of injuries/cases,” and “showing only an 185 in total” does not communicate the intended statistic. “Fatal injuries remained the lowest throughout the year” is also an awkward way to describe a multi-year period. There are spelling and number-format slips, including “2055-2006” and “2005-2005,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for precise statistical language and check year ranges and percentage terminology carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, and several sentences communicate the main information successfully, such as “They started at 49 reaching a high of 95 in 2001-2002 and ended up at 58 in 2006-2007.” However, some sentence structures are faulty or incomplete. “A similar trend was seen in slight injuries went up sharply” incorrectly combines a passive construction with a new finite clause; write, for example, “Slight injuries followed a similar trend, rising sharply…” The opening list would be clearer with “fatal, serious, and slight injuries,” and “total incident started” has a number-agreement problem. Punctuation spacing is inconsistent, as in “On the other hand ,serious.” Use a wider range of controlled clauses and proofread agreement, sentence boundaries, and punctuation.
