Great Britain - Gun and Knife Crime statistics - 1998-2007

Student answer (Band 5.5)

This table illustrates the data of various injuries resulted from knife crime between 1998 and 2007 and to which extent ratio of fatal, serious and slight injuries increased in this duration in Great Britain.

Generally, ratio of serious and slight injuries rised during the period except from small fluctuations but that of fatal injuries showed abrupt rise and fall in different years. Slight injuries led with highest percentage and fatal injuries remained at lowest.

The year [redacted phone] showed least number of injury cases as sum of all types was 864 but [redacted phone] was the time during which the number of injuries exceeded all the years with a number of 3912. Slight injuries were at heighest

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify relevant broad features, including the low starting total and the prominence of slight injuries, and you attempt an overview of how the categories changed. However, the response addresses the task only partially: it gives very little supporting detail and ends mid-sentence, so several key comparisons are missing. There are also factual inaccuracies. The table covers gun and knife crime, not knife crime alone, and 3,912 is the total for 2004–2005; 2006–2007 has no total shown. The stated percentage increases are not reported. The response is 35 words below the required minimum, which contributes to the lack of coverage. To improve, complete the summary and accurately compare the main figures and overall changes.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic, recognisable structure: an introduction is followed by a general overview and then an attempt to discuss particular years. Linking phrases such as “Generally” and “but” help signal the relationship between ideas. However, progression is limited because the final paragraph stops abruptly at “Slight injuries were at heighest,” leaving the comparison unfinished. Some references are also unclear: “the number of injuries” could mean a category or the total, and the claim about 2006–2007 is difficult to follow. Develop a complete paragraph that groups the figures logically, for example by comparing totals first and then injury categories, and use clear references to years and values.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “fatal,” “serious,” “slight,” “fluctuations,” and “percentage,” so the reader can identify the subject of the report. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “data of various injuries resulted from knife crime,” “ratio of … injuries,” and “led with highest percentage.” “Ratio” is not appropriate for the table’s counts and percentage increases, while “resulted from” does not fit naturally here. Spelling errors such as “rised” and “heighest” also reduce accuracy. Use precise terms such as “number,” “figure,” “proportion,” and “increase,” choosing each according to what the table actually reports.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt some complex sentence forms, including “Generally, ratio of serious and slight injuries rised during the period except from small fluctuations but that of fatal injuries showed…” and the clause beginning “The year 1998-1999 showed…”. These attempts communicate the general topic, but control is uneven. Articles and noun forms are often missing or awkward (“the data,” “the number of injury cases”), and the final sentence is incomplete. The long sentence about the years and totals also combines several ideas without clear grammatical boundaries. Aim for shorter, complete sentences and check subject–verb agreement, tense, and article use. For example, write “The number of serious injuries rose” and ensure every sentence has a complete main clause.
