Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given table illustrates the total number of different kinds of injuries (fatal, serious and slight) occuring from crimes like gun and knife from 1998 to 2007 and the percentage increase for these injuries over the given period.

Overall, fatal recorded the least incidents and slight injuries recorded at the highest with most in [redacted phone] period. The pecentage increase for slight was recorded the most whereas fatal's percentage remained the lowest. Serious and slight injuries rose over the years while fatal injury fluctuated. Generally, there were less total incidents recorded in the earlier years than the later years.

The data shows that, fatal injury incidents from 1998 to 2002 rose (from 49 to 95) then a relatively slow dip from 2003 to 2007 (from 80 to 58). The percentage increase for it was recorded at 18. For serious and slight injuries, both of them rose over the years with no noticeable dip. Serious recorded at 162 in [redacted phone] to 476 in [redacted phone] whereas slight recorded at 653 in [redacted phone] and 3296 at [redacted phone]. Serious percentage increase was recorded at 194 followed by slight with 405. The highest total recorded figure was in [redacted phone] with 3912 and lowest recorded at 864 in [redacted phone]. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main patterns: slight injuries were the most numerous, fatal injuries the fewest, and the overall total rose substantially before reaching its peak in 2004–2005. You also report the percentage increases and give useful figures, including 49 to 95 fatal injuries and the total of 3,912. This covers the task well, though some details are less fully or accurately presented. For example, serious injuries did not rise steadily: they fell from 437 to 411 in 2004–2005, and the slight-injury figure of 3,296 belongs to 2005–2006, not the final year. The phrase “most in 2005–2006” is also unclear because slight injuries peaked in 2004–2005. Distinguish the peak year from the final available figures and describe fluctuations precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a summary of the main features, and a paragraph giving supporting figures. The overview helps the reader understand the broad trends before the details, and expressions such as “Overall” and “The data shows” signal progression. However, some links between ideas are mechanical or unclear. In the final paragraph, the discussion moves from fatal injuries to serious and slight injuries, then to totals, without consistently grouping comparable figures. “For serious and slight injuries, both of them rose” also oversimplifies the pattern and makes the comparison less precise. Organise the detail paragraph by injury category or by overall totals, and use clearer references to years so that each comparison follows naturally.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a sufficient range of task-related vocabulary, including “percentage increase,” “fluctuated,” “incidents,” and “recorded,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are, however, several inaccurate or unnatural choices that limit precision. “Crimes like gun and knife” is not a natural way to describe the categories; “gun and knife crime” is more appropriate. Repeated use of “recorded” makes the account sound formulaic, while “a relatively slow dip” is an imprecise description of a decline. There are also spelling errors in “occuring” and “pecentage.” Aim for more natural collocations and vary reporting verbs, while checking spelling carefully. More precise vocabulary would also help distinguish a steady rise from a rise with a temporary fall.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including the contrast in “Serious and slight injuries rose over the years while fatal injury fluctuated.” Most of the intended meaning can be followed, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “fatal recorded the least incidents” lacks a clear noun phrase and article, and “slight injuries recorded at the highest” has an incomplete structure. In “Serious recorded at 162 … to 476,” the verb pattern is also faulty; use a complete construction such as “The figure for serious injuries rose from … to …”. Some sentence punctuation, including the comma after “The data shows that,” is unnecessary. Practise accurate subject–verb patterns and complete comparisons, while retaining the range of sentence forms you are attempting.
