Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response identifies the topic and mentions the three injury categories, but it does not provide a meaningful summary of the table’s main features. The statement that the total “rise[s] until the end of 2007” is inaccurate: the total peaked at 3,912 in 2004–05 and then fell to 3,821 in 2005–06, while no total is given for 2006–07. There is also no overview of the contrasting increases in slight and serious injuries versus the much smaller change in fatal injuries. The response is only 40 words, so it falls well short of the required 150 words; the 14 words copied from the prompt are excluded from that count. Select key trends and support them with accurate comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5
The response has a basic sequence: it introduces the table, names the injury categories, and then refers to the total. However, it consists of only two sentences and does not develop a clear progression from an overview to supporting details. The second sentence combines the categories and the total trend without explaining how the information relates, and there are no comparisons between years or injury types. Cohesion is therefore limited, although the reader can follow the general topic. Organise a fuller response into an introduction, an overview of the main trends, and a paragraph comparing selected figures; use linking phrases such as “By contrast” or “Meanwhile” to make those comparisons clear.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses a small set of relevant terms, including “injuries,” “gun and knife crime,” and “total,” so the subject is generally recognisable. However, the vocabulary is limited and some choices are inaccurate or awkward: “data percentage on” does not describe the table correctly, and “this percentage rise” confuses a percentage with a number of recorded injuries. There is also a spelling error in “distnict.” Use precise reporting language such as “figures for,” “the number of injuries,” and “increased by,” and distinguish counts from percentage changes. A wider range of terms for trends and comparisons would help communicate the table more accurately.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response communicates its basic meaning through two simple sentences, but it shows little range in sentence structure and contains errors in sentence formation. In “There are three types of injuries slight, serious and fatal,” the list is not properly punctuated or connected to the main clause. “From 1998 to 1999 total of 864 injuries recorded” lacks an article and a finite verb; a complete form would be “A total of 864 injuries were recorded in 1998–99.” The final clause, “this percentage rise,” also has an incorrect verb form and an unclear grammatical relationship to its subject. Practise complete clauses, articles, and past-tense reporting structures before attempting more complex comparisons.
