Student answer (Band 7.5)
These days, countries are becoming increasingly interconnected due to globalization. While some believe that this phenomenon is a positive development, I would argue that there are some underlying issues that need to be awared of.
First and foremost, globalization certainly have several positive impacts on people's every day life as well as economic development. For instance, an increasing number of opportunities enable more people to start their businesses, and this unprecedented market forces business owners to refine their products, which ultimately benefits consumers and the economy. In addition, studying abroad has become more common and affordable, allowing learners to broaden their horizens through travelling and further studying.
However, while those benefits may overwhelm the general public, it must be considered that this development has a negative impact on the environment and some local people. For example, in a tourist attraction in the north part of China, people's lives have been affected severely because of the pollution caused by travellers. It is understandable that tourists pay less attention to their behaviors and throw garbage away randomly, but the consequence of it is only faced by local people, damaging places where they live. Additionally, air travelling releases more green house gases, namely carbon dioxide, that travelling by cars or public transportation, which accelerates the process of global warming.
In conclusion, it is true that globalization is an overall positive development because it facilitates people's lives and promotes ecnomic development, but we need to remember the downsides of it, being aware of the consequences we might face.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position that acknowledges both the benefits and the drawbacks of globalization. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as the impact of tourism in northern China and the economic benefits of studying abroad. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat brief. To reach a higher band, you could expand on the 'why' and 'how' of these points with more depth. For instance, explaining the mechanism behind how globalization specifically forces businesses to refine products would strengthen the argument. Overall, the position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively summarizes your balanced view.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'In addition', 'However', and 'In conclusion' to link your thoughts effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the text. To improve, ensure that the transition between the positive impacts and the negative environmental consequences is slightly smoother to avoid a sudden shift in tone. The referencing is generally clear and does not cause confusion for the reader.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision. Phrases like 'unprecedented market forces', 'broaden their horizens', and 'facilitates people's lives' show a good attempt at using less common items. There are some minor spelling errors, such as 'horizens' (horizons) and 'ecnomic' (economic), and a slight misuse of 'awared of' (should be 'aware of'). While these errors are present, they do not impede communication. To move to a higher band, focus on refining your word choice and ensuring accurate spelling of key academic terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You show control over complex sentences, such as 'While some believe that this phenomenon is a positive development, I would argue that...'. However, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'globalization certainly have' (should be 'has') and 'that travelling by cars' (should be 'than'). Additionally, 'namely carbon dioxide, that travelling by cars' is slightly awkward. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the grammar does not hinder the reader's understanding. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help improve this score.
