Student answer (Band 7.5)
These days, countries are becoming increasingly interconnected due to globalization. While some believe that this phenomenon is a positive development, I would argue that there are some underlying issues that need to be aware of.
First and foremost, globalization certainly has several positive impacts on people's everyday life as well as economic development. For instance, an increasing number of opportunities enable more people to start their businesses, and this unprecedented market forces business owners to refine their products, which ultimately benefits consumers and the economy. In addition, studying abroad has become more common and affordable, allowing learners to broaden their horizens through travelling and further studying.
However, while those benefits are so significant that the general public is overwhelmed with joy, it must be considered that this development has a negative impact on the environment and some local people. For example, in a tourist attraction in the north part of China, people's lives have been affected severely because of the pollution caused by travellers. It is understandable that tourists pay less attention to their behaviors and throw garbage away randomly, but the consequence of it is only faced by local people, damaging places where they live. Additionally, air travel releases more greenhouse gases, namely carbon dioxide, than travelling by cars or public transportation, which accelerates the process of global warming.
In conclusion, it is true that globalization is an overall positive development because it facilitates people's lives and promotes economic development, but we need to remember the downsides of it, being aware of the consequences we might face.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position that acknowledges both the benefits and the drawbacks of globalisation. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as the mention of business opportunities and the environmental impact in northern China. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat brief. To reach a higher band, the arguments could be extended with more depth or analysis. The conclusion effectively summarises the writer's stance, maintaining a consistent position throughout the essay. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'In addition', 'However', and 'In conclusion' are used appropriately to link ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more sophisticated to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the positive and negative aspects of the topic, which helps the reader navigate the argument clearly.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The vocabulary used is generally appropriate and sufficient for the task. The writer demonstrates an ability to use topic-specific language such as 'unprecedented market', 'economic development', and 'greenhouse gases'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'horizens' (spelling) and 'throw garbage away randomly' (collocation). While the range is adequate, the essay would benefit from a wider variety of less common lexical items to demonstrate more precision and stylistic awareness. Nevertheless, the meaning is always clear, and the vocabulary choice does not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over basic grammar, and the majority of sentences are clear. However, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'need to be aware of' (should be 'need to be aware of' or 'need to be aware of them') and 'namely carbon dioxide, than travelling by cars' (awkward comparative structure). Despite these occasional errors, the punctuation is generally accurate, and the grammatical mistakes do not cause difficulty for the reader. A greater variety of complex structures would help elevate the score.
