Student answer (Band 7.5)

These days, countries are becoming increasingly interconnected due to globalization. While some believe that this phenomenon is a positive development, I would argue that there are some underlying issues that we need to be aware of.

First and foremost, globalization certainly has several positive impacts on people's everyday life as well as economic development. For instance, an increasing number of opportunities enable more people to start their businesses, and this unprecedented market forces business owners to refine their products, which ultimately benefits consumers and the economy. In addition, studying abroad has become more common and affordable, allowing learners to broaden their horizons through travelling and further studying.

However, while those benefits are so significant that the general public is overwhelmed with joy, it must be considered that this development has a negative impact on the environment and some local people. For example, in a tourist attraction in the north part of China, people's lives have been affected severely because of the pollution caused by travellers. It is understandable that tourists pay less attention to their behaviors and throw garbage away randomly, but the consequence of it is only faced by local people, damaging places where they live. Additionally, air travel releases more greenhouse gases, namely carbon dioxide, than travelling by cars or public transportation, which accelerates the process of global warming.

In conclusion, it is true that globalization is an overall positive development because it facilitates people's lives and promotes economic development, but we need to remember the downsides of it, being aware of the consequences we might face.

Overall7.5

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the task, presenting a clear position that acknowledges both the benefits and drawbacks of globalization. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as the mention of business opportunities and environmental concerns in China. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat brief. To reach a higher band, the arguments could be extended with more depth or nuanced analysis. For instance, the environmental impact section could explore the tension between economic growth and sustainability more thoroughly. Overall, the position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main points.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'In addition', 'However', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the topic. The progression of ideas is smooth, and referencing is generally clear. The use of cohesive devices is not overly mechanical, contributing to a natural flow of information throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task. The student uses some less common items such as 'unprecedented', 'facilitates', and 'interconnected', which demonstrate a good range. There are occasional minor inaccuracies in word choice or collocation, such as 'throw garbage away randomly' (better: 'litter indiscriminately') and 'overwhelmed with joy' (which is slightly hyperbolic for this context). However, these do not impede communication, and the overall lexical control is solid for an academic essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over grammar, with the majority of sentences being error-free. Complex structures, such as the conditional 'if' clauses or participial phrases, are used with reasonable accuracy. While there are a few minor slips, such as 'in a tourist attraction in the north part of China' (could be more concise) and 'the consequence of it is only faced by local people' (slightly awkward phrasing), these do not cause difficulty for the reader. Punctuation is generally accurate.
