Student answer (Band 7.5)
In this modern era, individuals interact significantly with each other through various means, such as the internet, air travel, trade, and social media applications. Many people believe that this increased interaction between nations through globalisation is a positive development. This essay will discuss this view before presenting my own opinion.
On the one hand, there are several reasons why people believe globalisation is a good thing. Firstly, the internet and social media have made communication much easier than in the past. People can talk with friends, colleagues, and business partners from different countries within a few seconds. They can also learn about other cultures, traditions, and languages through online platforms. Secondly, international trade allows countries to exchange goods and services, which gives people more choices at reasonable prices. For instance, many electronic products, clothes, and food items are imported from different nations. Furthermore, air travel has become faster and more affordable, allowing people to travel abroad for education, employment, business, or tourism. These opportunities help people gain knowledge and improve their quality of life.
On the other hand, some people think globalisation also creates several problems. One major issue is that local cultures and traditions may gradually disappear because many young people prefer foreign lifestyles, fashion, and entertainment. In addition, small local businesses often face strong competition from large international companies, making it difficult for them to survive. Another concern is that globalisation can spread economic problems quickly from one country to another. Despite these disadvantages, I believe that governments can reduce these issues by supporting local industries and preserving cultural values while still encouraging international cooperation.
In conclusion, globalisation has both advantages and disadvantages. Although it may affect local cultures and businesses, I believe its benefits are greater because it improves communication, increases trade, creates more educational and job opportunities, and helps countries build stronger relationships with each other.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a balanced discussion of both the benefits and drawbacks of globalisation. Your position is clear from the introduction and is consistently maintained throughout the essay, culminating in a firm conclusion. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the points regarding cultural erosion and economic interdependence. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific, concrete examples rather than general statements like 'many electronic products' or 'various means'. Overall, the response is well-structured and directly answers the prompt's requirement to discuss the view and provide an opinion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and you use a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'On the one hand', 'Furthermore', and 'Despite these disadvantages'. The transition between paragraphs is smooth, and the referencing is clear throughout. The structure is logical and easy to follow, which is a hallmark of a coherent response. To improve, ensure that the link between the final sentence of a paragraph and the start of the next is always seamless to maintain the flow of the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'economic problems', 'international cooperation', and 'cultural values' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is appropriate and conveys your meaning clearly, it is somewhat functional. To achieve a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated, less common lexical items or idiomatic collocations. For example, instead of 'good thing', you could use 'a catalyst for progress' or 'a multifaceted phenomenon'. Your spelling is accurate throughout the text.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The essay displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use complex sentences effectively, such as 'Although it may affect local cultures and businesses, I believe its benefits are greater because...'. The grammar is generally accurate, with very few errors that impede communication. Punctuation is used correctly to separate clauses and list items. To move into the higher bands, aim to incorporate a wider variety of complex structures, such as inversion or conditional sentences, and ensure that your control over these more advanced forms remains error-free.
