Student answer (Band 6.0)

Recently, there has been an increase in globalisation thanks to factors such as air travel, tourism, internet etc. Globalisation has allowed different countries to build better economic ties and improve their financial capabilities. Despite it bringing many great opportunities for the country, some local firms may not like the increase in foreign trade. But I strongly believe that globalisation is required for a country's growth.

To begin with, globalisation results in trade pacts with foreign countries, which results in the development of multinational companies and foreign industries. The argument that many local businesses hold is that the competition increases by a lot now that the market has opened up for foreign firms. This results in the disruption of employment rates in many sectors and it can completely destroy them. By having too many international companies, they can take over the countries national firms and can have a big impact on the industry.

Despite their argument, a more persuasive case can be made that thanks to those trade pacts, the countries GDP increases by a lot. This is due to the boost in exports and foreign investment. By attracting foreign investors, a countries economy will strengthen because a lot of capital is flowing in. A government can heavily profit from this by getting tariff and taxes from them. It boosts their funds and reserves, which can lead to many advancement for the public people.

By weighing both sides, I find the benefits of globalisation are far greater than the risks it possess. But it would be inaccurate to claim that it will not cause any initial disruptions in the market. It definitely will but it can recover really fast as the economy grows. A government can play a big role to avoid situations where firms get dissolved due to establishment of foreign industries by setting up laws which prevent how much goods a firm can produce at a time.

In conclusion, globalisation plays a vital role in developing a country's economy and making them financially strong and capable.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, presenting a clear position throughout. The arguments regarding the impact on local businesses versus the benefits of GDP growth are relevant and logically extended. However, the development is somewhat repetitive, particularly in the second and third paragraphs, where the focus on 'trade pacts' and 'foreign investment' could have been supported by more diverse examples. The conclusion effectively summarizes the stance. To reach a higher band, ensure that the counter-arguments are balanced with more nuanced analysis rather than relying on general statements about economic growth.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the transition between the opposing views and the author's opinion is smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Despite their argument', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, some referencing is slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to avoid a repetitive structure. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to a coherent response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate and allows for clear communication of ideas. There is an attempt to use topic-specific terminology such as 'multinational companies', 'foreign investment', and 'tariff'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simpler phrasing like 'increases by a lot' or 'big impact'. To improve, the student should aim for more precise collocations and a wider range of academic vocabulary to express economic concepts with greater sophistication and variety.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'a countries GDP' (should be 'a country's GDP'), 'public people' (unnatural collocation), and 'risks it possess' (should be 'possesses'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and agreement issues throughout. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring subject-verb agreement would significantly improve this score.
